HARTFORD, Conn. — The Bates College football team found out the hard way that Trinity will once again be a contender in the NESCAC in 2018. The Bantams defeated the Bobcats 59-16 on Saturday. Trinity scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to grab a 14-0 lead heading into the second. Bates responded midway through the second with a 12-play, 50-yard drive that ended in a 36-yard field goal by Justin Foley. A few minutes later, Bates defensive back Anthony Costa intercepted at Jordan Vazzano pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, cutting Trinity’s lead to 14-9 with 4:30 remaining in the first half. But the Bantams scored twice in the final 97 seconds of the half, both on touchdown passes by Vazzano, who threw four in the first half and five in the game. Trinity pulled away in the third quarter with 24 unanswered points. Bates scored with 4:58 left in the game when freshman running back Caleb Bolden ran in from 4 yards out. PURDUE Derrick Barnes, a sophomore linebacker from Holy Cross, helped lead the Boilermakers on defense. Barnes totaled six tackles in the loss. MINNESOTA Minnesota freshman quarterback Tanner Morgan (Ryle) got his first taste of playing time in a 48-10 win over New Mexico State Aug. 30 where he completed his only pass attempt for seven yards. WESTERN KENTUCKY Ryan Nuss, a redshirt senior and Fairfield graduate, returns as the starting kicker. He had a 25-yard field goal in WKU’s 34-3 loss at Wisconsin to start this season. The Bobcats unveiled their new uniforms Sunday morning for their team photo and the program’s media day at Garcelon Field. The new Under Armour uniforms vary slightly from the Adidas versions worn in recent seasons — they’re still maroon-on-maroon but have black and white accents — but they are clearly an updated look. “We’ve been waiting for these,” senior defensive back and team captain Joe Frake said. “It seemed like every year, it was like, ‘We getting new unis? College football: UMaine player’s death shook state’s football programs
BRUNSWICK — When freshman Darius Minor collapsed and died while participating in a supervised University of Maine workout last Tuesday, the loss was felt in college football programs across the state. At Husson University, the coaches were in a meeting when the news broke. “Devastated is not a strong enough word to describe how we felt,” said Gabby Price, Husson’s head coach. “A lot of us cried.” College football deaths are rare — from 2000-2016, an average of two NCAA football players died per season, according to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association — but when they happen close by, they’re magnified. “I’ve heard of situations like this in the past,” said Jack Cosgrove, the former UMaine coach who is entering his first year as the coach at Colby College. “But never so close to home. College football: Tickets remain for just three Penn State home games
Wednesday July 25, 2018 12:01 AM Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Wisconsin games sold out Written by Rich Scarcella CHICAGO - Four of Penn State's seven home football games this season have been sold out, according to athletic director Sandy Barbour.Public and student season tickets are sold out, as well as single-game tickets for Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Wisconsin."I'm never satisfied," Barbour said Tuesday, "(but) it's been a great response from our fan base. It's going to be an incredible environment, as it always is. Our fans are showing their appreciation for what our student-athletes are doing on and off the field."Single-game tickets are available only for the Appalachian State (Sept. 1), Kent State (Sept. 15) and Maryland (Nov. 24) games.Barbour, who was hired in 2014, also addressed several other topics at Big Ten Football Media Days.On her contract status: "I'm going to continue to be the athletic director at Penn State.
