( CBS Detroit ) — The COVID pandemic has damaged the restaurant industry and other large segments of the economy over the last year. At the outset, rules put in place to deal with the airborne virus forced establishments to close their doors for weeks in many parts of the country. Some never reopened. Others reopened, with safety measures in place, but couldn’t survive given the capacity limits. A heavy reliance on delivery and takeout just wasn’t feasible for restaurants with large dining rooms. Still, many of those not oriented toward in-person service pivoted and survived in the to-go environment. The pandemic also illuminated some of the industry’s foundational cracks, particularly when it came to workers. “Some of the cultural problems, some of the pay problems, the labor issues that have been really kind of slowly simmering to the surface for many years,” as Lilly Jan, a lecturer of food and beverage at Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, summed it up. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A party-ending curfew imposed after fights, gunfire, property destruction and dangerous stampedes broke out among huge crowds of people in Miami Beach could extend through the end of spring break. Miami Beach commissioners voted unanimously Sunday to empower the city manager to extend the curfew in the South Beach entertainment district until at least April 12, effectively shutting down a spring break hot spot in one of the few states fully open during the pandemic. SWAT teams and law enforcement officers from at least four other agencies sought to contain the raucous crowds, but confrontations continued for days before Miami Beach officials enacted the curfew, which forces Ocean Drive restaurants to stop outdoor seating entirely. City Manager Raul Aguila said many people from other states were coming in “to engage in lawlessness and an ‘anything goes’ party attitude.” He said most weren’t patronizing the businesses that badly need tourism dollars, and … [Read more...] about Miami Beach curfew aims to shut down Spring Break partying

Another planned condo project in Denver will instead be looking for renters. A 12-story building on tap for the corner of 35th Street and Chestnut Place, dubbed Flora, is now going to be apartments, according to Edee Anesi, a member of the project’s development team. The decision mirrors one made last year by Golden-based Confluence Cos., which nixed the for-sale component of its Zia Sunnyside project while mid-construction. Flora, however, is at a much earlier stage — it has yet to break ground. The 0.42-acre lot, purchased for $3.8 million in 2018, is still home to a shuttered dog daycare. Anesi said groundbreaking for a condo building was originally expected last July. But when the coronavirus pandemic set in, the development team put the project on pause given the economic uncertainty at the time. “During the pause we decided to go to apartments,” Anesi said. Anesi is developing the 92-unit project with her father Greg Anesi and Brock Fleming of Belay Development. The … [Read more...] about Plans for 12-story RiNo building change from condos to apartments
