Few things move the sports conversation like global celebrities on the court or a new generation of franchise quarterbacks. But baseball is trying.Right on time, the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox belted out a roar of relevance from rowdy Fenway Park on Wednesday night. Commissioner Rob Manfred didn’t script it this way — if he had, the game would have been 90 minutes shorter — but his two glamour franchises, rolling around on the grass, in a game televised by MLB Network. Well, it was a beautiful sight for business.“It’s Red Sox-Yankees,” Boston’s David Price said. “That’s what everybody wants. Dual threat on the diamond: Aaron Schunk contributing in many ways for Georgia baseball
It was the bottom of the seventh inning at Foley Field on April 4. Georgia was leading its rival, Georgia Tech, by a narrow margin of 1-0.With the bases loaded and one out, “Brass Monkey” by the Beastie Boys blared through the stadium speakers, which could only mean one thing: Georgia sophomore Aaron Schunk was coming to the plate, looking to provide some insurance runs for the Bulldogs. As he often does in more ways than one, Schunk delivered. With a single to center field, Schunk scored catcher Mason Meadows and opened the door for two more Georgia runs to score in the inning. Then came the top of the eighth inning. Schunk headed back out to his regular defensive post at third base, as reliever Zac Kristofak pitched a scoreless half-inning. And while most of the Georgia fielders headed back to the dugout for the bottom of the eighth, Schunk went in a different direction, trotting out to the Georgia bullpen on the right side of the diamond to get in some warmup pitches.Once … [Read more...] about Dual threat on the diamond: Aaron Schunk contributing in many ways for Georgia baseball
BYU Baseball: Cougars getting good work from No. 1 and No. 2 starters
The BYU baseball team came through with three last-at-bat victories in last week’s home sweep of Santa Clara.Lost a bit in the celebration were two excellent outings on the mound by junior right-hander Jordan Wood and senior lefty Hayden Rogers. As often happens in close games, neither Wood nor Rogers ended up with the victory in come-from-behind wins. But both starters were terrific in their appearances. Wood went eight innings in the opener, allowing just four hits and an unearned run while striking out five. The Cougars won that game 2-1 when Brock Hale came home from third on a Santa Clara error in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Drew Zimmerman, who pitched to three batters in the top of the ninth, ended up with the win.Rogers threw 5.1 innings in the second game of the series, giving up just four hits and two runs. The Cougars got a walk-off home run from Daniel Schneemann in the bottom of the 10th for a 6-4 victory, with Bo Burrup pitching the ninth for the win. This … [Read more...] about BYU Baseball: Cougars getting good work from No. 1 and No. 2 starters

Columbia baseball blasts past Ballston Spa, 16-4
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. >> Age before beauty. Ballston Spa is a young, good looking baseball squad, but Columbia High was a bit more matured and its Virginia Commonwealth-bound 6-foot 7-inch starter, Danny Watson, found himself as Wednesday’s game wore on and the Blue Devils got the best of the Scotties, 16-4 in Suburban Council action. “We have a lot of seniors, we have a lot of experience and last year coming in the year we had a lot of juniors and a lot of young guys that didn’t have that experience,” Columbia slugger Nicolas Stagnitta said. “I think coming into this year knowing it’s going to be a tough game. “There are a lot of good teams, there are a lot of good players and knowing we have a lot of good players and we work hard, if we just grind it out, it’ll go our way.” Advertisement Grinding was what both squads did through the first five innings with three ties and three lead changes the league tilt was as … [Read more...] about Columbia baseball blasts past Ballston Spa, 16-4
