Fmr. Obama Treasury Counselor Rattner: Biden’s Gas Tax Holiday, Criticism of Refiners, and Floating DPA Are Off-Base
On Thursday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Steve Rattner, who served as counselor to the Treasury Secretary in the Obama administration, said that if you gave people at the White House truth serum, “I’m not sure how excited they would be” about a three-month gas tax holiday and that President Joe Biden’s criticism of refiners and suggesting invoking the Defense Production Act are off-base because current oil refineries “are running at full capacity.” Rattner stated, “I’m having a hard time finding anybody who’s excited — as excited as the White House is about this gas tax holiday.” And “Deep down, if you gave them truth serum, I’m not sure how excited they would be.” He added, “The average adult American will save $23.85 over a three-month gas holiday.” Rattner further pushed back against Biden’s criticism of refiners for not refining enough by saying that “refining capacity has gone down” due to refineries shutting down since the pandemic, but “the rest of the ones that … [Read more...] about Fmr. No, Geena Davis Still Don’t Tell You If Dottie Meant To Drop The Ball.
(CNN) — Geena Davis is not someone to stay silent on important matters. In fact, she’s built an research empire of sorts through her Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media and founded a film festival that both aim to empower underrepresented voices in Hollywood. READ MORE: Tampa Bay Lightning Game 5 Watch Party Tonight But on this day, beaming in via Zoom from Arkansas, Davis is mum, even when implored to end a 30-year debate among “A League of Their Own” loyalists by answering an all-important queery: Did Dottie Hinson drop the ball on purpose? “I love that people still argue about it 30 years later,” she says, speaking of the climactic scene that costs the Rockford Peaches their World Series win and leaves one half of a feuding sister duo defeated. “I had to decide for my character what actually happened. So I, at least from my perspective, I know what happened … but I’ve decided I’m never gonna tell anybody.” She loves the ending, too, she says, contested as it might … [Read more...] about No, Geena Davis Still Don’t Tell You If Dottie Meant To Drop The Ball.
Adley Rutschman Leads Orioles Past Hobbled White Sox 4-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Touted rookie Adley Rutschman homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Baltimore Orioles past the banged-up Chicago White Sox 4-0 on Thursday night. Ryan Mountcastle had two doubles among his three hits as the Orioles won their second in a row and third in four. World shares gain as investors shrug off downbeat data
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were higher in Europe and Asia on Friday despite data suggesting some economies are slowing. U.S. futures also advanced after a rally Thursday on Wall Street, where the market is headed for its first weekly gain after three weeks of punishing losses. Market players are looking ahead to U.S. inflation data due next week and hoping that the moderation in prices of oil and some other commodities this week is a sign inflation might be abating. “We will soon find out if the inflation trade is pausing or cracking. Pain levels are raising with the ‘recession rotation’ in full swing as the narrative shifts from supply chain concerns to demand destruction,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. Britain’s FTSE 100 added 1.1% to 7,097.20 after Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered a double blow as voters … [Read more...] about World shares gain as investors shrug off downbeat data
How a ‘Wannabe MTG’ Is Pushing an Establishment Republican Over the Edge
For most of his career, Rodney Davis has been the epitome of a mainstream Republican congressman. In order to continue being a Republican congressman, however, he might have to turn into something else. First elected to Congress in 2012, Davis represented a purple Central Illinois district. He once chaired the Republican Main Street Caucus, a House power base for GOP moderates. And last year, he was one of 35 House Republicans to vote in favor of creating an independent commission to investigate Jan. 6. But when Illinois lost a congressional seat and redrew its district maps last fall, Davis was lumped into a new, more rural district that Donald Trump would have won in 2020 by a nearly 40-point margin. And he wasn’t alone: Rep. Mary Miller, a freshman Republican, was drawn into the new district, too. What’s unfolded since then has been an unusually bitter primary fight between Davis and Miller, which has divided GOP power brokers and attracted a staggering $10 million in … [Read more...] about How a ‘Wannabe MTG’ Is Pushing an Establishment Republican Over the Edge
U.S. Navy to Wargame Impact of ‘Climate Change’ on Future Conflicts
An open-source wargame to gauge “how climate change could affect a future conflict” has been scheduled for the U.S. Navy in a continuation of President Joe Biden’s executive order on sustainability. The half-day exercise next week will feature staff from Capitol Hill, the Defense Department, the defense industry, think tanks and academia. Navy assistant secretary for energy, installations and environment Meredith Berger previewed the planned table-top exercise during a Defense Writers Group breakfast, as reported by USNI News . The purpose of the June 29 event is “to come together and really think about and experience what it means to operate in a climate-impacted environment,” Berger said. “We’re going to create the right level of stress in a very responsible way to see that it is hard to make these choices and there [are] unanticipated consequences and there’re costs and impacts and all sorts of intervening circumstances that we need to think about from each other’s … [Read more...] about U.S. Navy to Wargame Impact of ‘Climate Change’ on Future Conflicts
Another recession warning: Falling copper prices

You can listen to an audio version of the newsletter by clicking the same link. New York (CNN Business) Some investors look to copper prices as a bellwether for the global economy. If you're one of them, you have good reason to be worried. What's happening: Copper prices hit 16-month lows on Thursday as traders dumped the metal. They've dropped more than 11% in two weeks. "Copper prices are just starting to account for the fact that global growth is slowing," Daniel Ghali, director of commodity strategy at TD Securities, told me. The metal is used in many construction materials, including electrical wires and water pipes. That means it's often viewed as a proxy for economic activity, since demand tends to heat up when the economy is expanding and cool when it's contracting. It's affectionately referred to as "Dr. … [Read more...] about Another recession warning: Falling copper prices
Doctors report compromising care out of fear of Texas abortion law
Doctors worried about getting sued under Texas’ restrictive abortion law have delayed treating pregnancy complications until patients’ lives were in danger, according to a paper from the Texas Policy Evaluation Project. The law, which empowers private citizens to file suit against anyone who “aids or abets” in an abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy, has caused confusion among providers and complicated treatment for patients facing pregnancy complications, the study found. The impact of Texas’ law, which went into effect in September, is a harbinger of things to come as the nation braces for the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. Texas, along with more than two dozen other states, is expected to ban all abortion, with only a narrow exception to save the life of the pregnant patient. The Texas Policy Evaluation Project, a research institute at the University of Texas that focuses on “evidence-based, equitable reproductive and sexual health care,” has been studying … [Read more...] about Doctors report compromising care out of fear of Texas abortion law
