(AP) — Anthony Holman is the highest-ranking NCAA official at the College World Series and the man in charge of the Division I baseball championship. Holman is Black, and when he watches the games, he doesn't see many people who look like him on the field or in the dugouts. “I pay attention to it for sure,” he said, “and it's disappointing. To have eight teams and maybe have a dozen or so folks of color, I think that’s something we should look to increase for sure." Baseball remains one of the least racially diverse college sports. There were fewer than two dozen Black players — and no Black head coaches or assistant coaches — among the eight teams that made it to the College World Series. Of the 279 Division I teams not from historically Black colleges and universities, only 4% of players, 1% of the head coaches and 1% of assistant coaches were … [Read more...] about College baseball intent on increasing Black players, coaches

It comes from the Latin, meaning literally to "spring back." Resiliency is the ability to bounce back into shape or position, to recover strength, spirits, good humor, and to rapidly recover from illness, change or misfortune. It enables us to continue to be who we have been over time, to continue our direction, our purpose, our very identity in the midst of trial and tribulation. Interestingly, resilience represents both elasticity and perseverance, both our withstanding setbacks of whatever sort and our flexibility to bend but not to break. You are evidencing resilience when you … [Read more...] about Develop Resilience

(AP) – Jon Cooper backtracked and shifted a possible missed call to the rearview mirror with the expertise of a coach who has been here before. Counterpart Jared Bednar, on the verge of his first NHL championship, sought to settle the issue once and for all and move on. Still, the Stanley Cup Final is roaring toward a conclusion full of uncertainty about the officiating, which is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after Nazem Kadri’s overtime goal put the Colorado Avalanche up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. A year after condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, survivors focus on healing
SURFSIDE, Fla. — One year after a 12-story condominium tower collapsed , killing 98 people, survivors are grappling with the trauma and grief as they try to heal emotionally and physically. A 15-year-old boy found alive in the rubble is gaining strength from starting a nonprofit group with his father after his mother was killed in the collapse, and a 73-year-old man is returning to his religious roots after he saw divine intervention in the experience. Jonah Handler, now 16, was one of the few people pulled from the rubble alive. His mother, Stacie Fang, 54, was killed. Jonah was home with Fang when the South Tower of the Champlain Towers complex fell, and she died shortly after she arrived at the hospital. After Jonah was rescued, he called his father, using an EMT’s phone. “He was touched by God,” said Jonah's father, Neil Handler, Fang's ex-husband. “It’s a miracle.” Now Jonah and Handler live together in the building still standing, the North Tower. “It’s … [Read more...] about A year after condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, survivors focus on healing
