Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho's strict abortion bans will be allowed to take effect while legal challenges over the laws play out in court, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled Friday. The ruling means potential relatives of an embryo or fetus can now sue abortion providers over procedures done after six weeks of gestation — before many people know they are pregnant. Another stricter ban criminalizing all abortions takes effect later this month. A doctor and a regional Planned Parenthood affiliate sued the state earlier this year over three anti-abortion laws, most designed to take effect should the U.S. Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade, which it did in June. In a split ruling, the majority of justices on the Idaho Supreme Court said the laws could take effect but sped up the timeline for the lawsuits to be decided. Two justices agreed with expediting the cases, but … [Read more...] about Idaho Supreme Court won’t block strict abortion bans

UK Charges ‘Jihadi Paul,’ Alleged Final Member Of Notorious ISIS ‘Beatles’
The United Kingdom levied terrorism charges against the alleged “Jihadi Paul,” a notorious Islamic State (IS) fighter who participated in gruesome acts of terrorism with a group of four British IS members collectively known as the “Beatles,” after the well-known British band. The U.K.’s Metropolitan Police arrested Aine Davis, 38, in Luton Airport Wednesday upon arrival from Turkey, where he has been held in prison since 2014 on suspicion of involvement with the Beatles, according to CNN. Davis, who took on the name Hamza after converting to Islam, was remanded in custody after declining to enter a plea at a hearing before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London Thursday. A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division said it had “authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Aine Leslie Junior Davis for terrorism offenses in 2014, and after being deported to England by Turkish authorities,” CNN reported. In rare move, school librarian fights back in court against conservative activists
A Louisiana school librarian is suing two men for defamation after they accused her of advocating to keep "pornographic" materials in the parish library's kids' section. It's a rare example of an educator taking legal action against conservatives who use extreme rhetoric in their battle against LGBTQ-themed books. Amanda Jones, a librarian at a middle school in Denham Springs, Louisiana, filed a defamation lawsuit Wednesday, arguing that Facebook pages run by Michael Lunsford and Ryan Thames falsely labeled her a pedophile who wants to teach 11-year-olds about anal sex. Jones, the president of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians, was alarmed and outraged by the verbal attacks, which came after she spoke against censorship at a Livingston Parish Library Board of Control meeting. She said she’s suing the two men because she’s exhausted with the insults hurled at educators and librarians over LGBTQ materials. “I’ve had enough for everybody,” Jones said in an … [Read more...] about In rare move, school librarian fights back in court against conservative activists
Google to Pay Nearly $43M Over Collection of Android Location Data
This article, Google to Pay Nearly $43M Over Collection of Android Location Data , originally appeared on CNET.com . Australia's consumer watchdog agency said Friday that Google has been ordered to pay AU$60 million , nearly $43 million, by the Federal Court over the collection of location data on Android phones. The fine stems from legal action the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission initiated back in 2019. The ACCC accused Google of "making misleading representations to consumers" about the collection and use of personal location data on Android devices between January 2017 and December 2018. The court previously found that Google misled consumers into thinking " Location History " was the only setting that impacted whether the tech giant collected, kept and used location data, when in fact, the "Web & App Activity" setting also allowed Google to collect some of this information, according to the ACCC. An estimated 1.3 million people with Google … [Read more...] about Google to Pay Nearly $43M Over Collection of Android Location Data

Gov: No school vouchers approved yet for Tennessee families
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said Friday the state had not yet approved any school vouchers for families seeking taxpayer funds to cover private school expenses, even as students begin a new school year. The Republican governor had announced in mid-July that the contentious voucher program would begin immediately, after the Tennessee Supreme Court lifted a key obstacle that had prevented its implementation for nearly two years. The announcement left the state Department of Education with just a few weeks to establish an application process and vet qualifying families as the 2022-23 school year approached. “There are about 250 families that have actually applied (but) those approvals have not been made yet,” Lee told reporters. “The process is underway.” Known as education savings accounts, the vouchers would give eligible families up to about $8,100 in public tax dollars for private schooling tuition and other preapproved expenses. The program only … [Read more...] about Gov: No school vouchers approved yet for Tennessee families
Column: One last salute to four of our greatest athletes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 17 To call them four of the greatest athletes in the history of women's sports is a bit of a slight. Let's just call them four of the greatest. Period. In what should be a melancholy, reflective time for all sports fans, Serena Williams, Sue Bird, Sylvia Fowles and Allyson Felix have decided it's time to go, almost in unison, leaving behind a gaping hole that the next generation will be hard-pressed to fill. Because these four icons are more than just stellar athletes, though their accomplishments on courts and tracks around the world leave no doubt they are — and were — among the very best to play their sports. You can also make a pretty open-and-shut case that they are leaving a bigger mark away from the arena. They inspired young people to follow in their footsteps.
