Amazon accuses Trump of ‘improper pressure’ on JEDI contract

· December 9, 2019 ·

Amazon said in a legal complaint unsealed Monday that it had lost a multibillion-dollar cloud computing contract with the Pentagon because President Trump used “improper pressure” to divert it from the company to harm its chief executive, Jeff Bezos. The Defense Department reviewed outdated submissions from the company and overlooked key technical capabilities, Amazon claimed, saying those errors tipped the scales in favor of Microsoft, which won the contract in October. Amazon had been considered the front-runner for the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure project, known as JEDI, in part because it had built cloud services for the CIA. Its Amazon Web Services, or AWS, business is also the country’s biggest cloud computing provider. But Trump said publicly that other “great companies” should have a chance at the $10 billion contract. Trump said he would take “a very strong look” at the JEDI contract, noting that companies including … [Read more...] about Amazon accuses Trump of ‘improper pressure’ on JEDI contract

Time to derail California’s train to nowhere

· February 21, 2019 ·

Gov. Gavin Newsom came close this month to abandoning the state’s misbegotten bullet train project that’s already cost many billions of dollars and demonstrates no signs of becoming viable. “Let’s be real,” Newsom told legislators in his first State of the State address. “The project as currently planned would cost too much and take too long. There’s been too little oversight and not enough transparency. Right now, there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A.” The bold — and logical — move would have been to finish what’s under construction in the San Joaquin Valley, fold it into existing Amtrak service and then cancel everything else before it gobbles up even more money. But Newsom couldn’t bring himself to entirely pull the plug on this hot mess. Voters were sold a bill of goods by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Legislature in a 2008 ballot … [Read more...] about Time to derail California’s train to nowhere

Where the hockey education of Avalanche rookie sensation Cale Makar began

· December 8, 2019 ·

CALGARY, Alberta — The sun dips beneath a snow-peaked horizon beyond where the building sits, tucked away on the wooded hillside of a quiet and well-kept neighborhood. Kids carry large gear bags through a parking lot toward the sprawling two-rink facility on this chilled November weeknight as a soft orange glow illuminates a white banner above the entryway, with three words in red capitalized letters: CROWCHILD TWIN ARENA. Welcome to the home of Cale Makar’s hockey education. It’s where the meteoric rise of a 21-year-old Colorado Avalanche sensation began. How the early frontrunner for NHL Rookie of the Year developed into an every-tool defenseman, a magician with the puck, and pure lightning on the ice. Why the local kid from the Crowchild Blackhawks youth program made it so big, so fast.Don’t be fooled by Makar’s slight build, rosy cheeks and polite smile. He’s a 5-foot-11 generational talent who embraces the spotlight and collects points at a … [Read more...] about Where the hockey education of Avalanche rookie sensation Cale Makar began
