This Law Will Save Newborns After Botched Abortions From Murder. Here’s Why It Matters.
The majority of debate between pro-lifers and abortion advocates has centered around the 20-week abortion ban that failed in the Senate Monday. Another important bill, however, recently passed the House and would prevent babies who’ve been born after botched abortions from being murdered shortly thereafter. The U.S. House approved the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in January, and it requires health care practitioners to give the same care to a child born alive after a botched abortion as they would provide to any other child birthed at the same gestational age. They must also ensure that babies born after botched abortions are immediately admitted to a hospital. Any health care individual who violates the provisions of the bill — H. R. 37 — will face fines and up to five years in prison. The mother of a child who is aborted after being born cannot be prosecuted under the bill. She can however, sue for damages against an individual who kills a living child who’s … [Read more...] about This Law Will Save Newborns After Botched Abortions From Murder. Here’s Why It Matters.
Slaughter Beach reaches ecotourism enthusiasts

(AP) — As many Delawareans flock to Rehoboth and Dewey beaches this time of year, one of the state’s lesser-known coastal towns is experiencing revived tourism. For some, Slaughter Beach’s horseshoe crabs, red knots and other wildlife win out over shopping, the boardwalk and nightlife. A town with only two businesses, the northern Sussex County spot is experiencing an uptick in visitors interested in ecotourism, according to Mayor Bob Wood, who said its popularity is unlike anything he has seen since he’s lived there. Mayor Wood, originally from Baltimore, bought a Slaughter Beach house with his wife in December 1999, vacationing at the home before moving there permanently in 2016. He said that, though the town has been gentrified over the years, the recent boost of ecotourists mirrors an early boom in the area’s history. He hearkened back to … [Read more...] about Slaughter Beach reaches ecotourism enthusiasts
Play tells story of filling in pools rather than integrating

(AP) — As American citizens celebrated freedom and liberty in their nation on Independence Day, 1961, a government founded on notions of the inalienable human rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness took action at a local level to deny those rights to their fellow citizens whose skin was not white. This little-taught chapter of local history is being brought to life in an original play, “Buried Deep,” produced through Endstation Theatre Company, affiliated with Randolph College. On that sweltering July day in Lynchburg, as many residents sought the relief offered by public pools, the city closed those pools down because some Black residents went to swim in the whites-only pools at Miller and Riverside parks. They were exercising their civil rights and making intentional strides toward integration and … [Read more...] about Play tells story of filling in pools rather than integrating
