Lawmaker Attempts to Fight Surging Chicago Carjackings by Banning Video Games
Illinois State Rep. Marcus Evans Jr. (D) is attempting to fight a surge in Chicago carjackings by pushing to ban the sales of the Grand Theft Auto video game. The New York Post reports that Evans “introduced legislation Friday to amend an existing state law that prohibits the sale of certain video games to minors.” The Chicago Sun-Time s notes the legislation, HB3531, would ban sales of other games too, targeting games that allegedly depict “psychological harm.” Evans said, “The bill would prohibit the sale of some of these games that promote the activities that we’re suffering from in our communities.” WTTW explained that 218 carjackings were reported in Chicago in January 2021 alone, which is an increase of 183 percent over the number of carjackings witnessed in January 2020. On January 29, 2021, Breitbart News reported that Chicago Alderman Stephanie Coleman responded to the surge in carjackings by hiring a private firm to provide security for an hour each … [Read more...] about Lawmaker Attempts to Fight Surging Chicago Carjackings by Banning Video Games
No bribes or cities named “Amazon”: Colorado’s pitch to get the next headquarters touts incentives that could exceed $100M
There were no promises to create a Colorado city called Amazon. There were no bribes from the state like the 21-foot cactus an Arizona city sent to get the massive retailer to build a second headquarters there. And there was no way Colorado was going to touch one state’s lavish offer of $7 billion in public incentives. Colorado, which doesn’t plan to ask taxpayers for more funding to lure Amazon, on Wednesday submitted a more subdued proposal that state officials hope will attract a new employer and bring up to 50,000 jobs to the Denver region. The state emailed the official bid a day before Amazon’s deadline, as well as mailed five paper copies overnight to the Seattle retailer’s headquarters. “Colorado’s proposal does not lead with incentives. It leads with talent,” said Sam Bailey, who led the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. in working with the state to submit the official bid. “Ultimately, 50,000 jobs shouldn’t be led with incentives but a community that has the … [Read more...] about No bribes or cities named “Amazon”: Colorado’s pitch to get the next headquarters touts incentives that could exceed $100M
Colorado’s first Amazon fulfillment center in Aurora to be stocked with larger items
When Colorado’s first Amazon fulfillment center opens later this year, the 1 million-square-foot warehouse in Aurora won’t be full of books, beauty products and small gadgets. Instead, the 36-foot-tall racks will be packed with some of the larger items that customers order from the e-commerce giant, Amazon officials said Friday during a construction tour of the site. “Anything that’s greater than 18 inches in diameter would be in this building,” spokeswoman Ashley Robinson said. “You’re talking baseball bats, boxes of diapers, patio furniture, musical equipment.” Orders for smaller items will continue to be fulfilled out of state, potentially at centers in Texas, Arizona or Kansas, she said. “Our buildings don’t just serve one specific region. They serve everywhere,” Robinson said. “So while we’re locating this building to be as close as possible to the customer, that doesn’t mean you’re still not getting those items from all across the country.” Construction is on … [Read more...] about Colorado’s first Amazon fulfillment center in Aurora to be stocked with larger items
