Archie Battersbee, a 12-year-old boy whose parents have been fighting to keep him on life support after he fell into a coma in April, died Saturday morning after British courts ruled to suspend treatment. “It’s with my deepest sympathy and sadness to tell you Archie passed at 12:15 today,” his mother, Hollie Dance, said from outside the hospital. “And can I just tell you, I’m the proudest mum in the whole world.” Dance and Battersbee’s father had been fighting to keep the boy alive since he was discovered unconscious at home on April 7 with severe brain injuries. The British High Court ruled last month that the hospital should suspend life-sustaining treatment, deeming it “futile.” His family sealed the decision to the Supreme Court, and even asked the UN for support, but their appeals were rejected. The family had asked for Battersbee to be transferred to hospice, but the High Court ruled he was too medically unstable. Treatment was suspended after the Court of Appeal and … [Read more...] about 12-Year-Old Archie Battersbee Dies After Being Removed From Life Support

UK Court Blocks Parents From Moving Comatose Son to Hospice
LONDON (AP) – A British court has rejected a request from the parents of a comatose boy to allow them to move their son to a hospice when hospital doctors withdraw his life-support treatment. Barring any further legal action, the decision would open the door for doctors at the Royal London Hospital to end life-sustaining treatments for 12-year-old Archie Battersbee. He has been in a coma since early April and doctors believe he is brain dead. “I return to where I started, recognizing the enormity of what lays ahead for Archie´s parents and the family. Their unconditional love and dedication to Archie is a golden thread that runs through this case,” High Court Judge Lucy Thies wrote. “I hope now Archie can be afforded the opportunity for him to die in peaceful circumstances, with the family who meant so much to him as he clearly does to them.” Archie´s care has been the subject of weeks of legal battles as his parents sought to force the hospital to continue life-sustaining … [Read more...] about UK Court Blocks Parents From Moving Comatose Son to Hospice

The parents of Archie Battersbee vowed to fight on. The 12-year-old has been in a coma since early April and doctors believe he is brain dead. “All our wishes as a family have been denied by the authorities,″ his mother, Hollie Dance said. “We are broken, but we are keeping going, because we love Archie and refuse to give up on him.” After High Court Judge Lucy Theis rejected the family’s request Friday morning, Archie’s parents asked the Court of Appeal for permission to challenge the ruling. When that court refused to take the case late in the day, they applied to the European Court of Human Rights to intervene. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the ECHR would take the case. Family loses Supreme Court bid to extend boy’s life support
LONDON — Britain’s Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to prevent a hospital withdrawing life support from a 12-year-old boy with catastrophic brain damage, rejecting a bid by his parents to extend his treatment. The parents of Archie Battersbee had asked Supreme Court justices to block a lower court’s ruling that the Royal London Hospital can turn off the boy’s ventilator and stop other interventions that are keeping him alive. Archie’s treatment had been due to end at noon Tuesday, but the hospital said it would await the decision of the Supreme Court. Justices at the U.K.’s top court said Archie had “no prospect of any meaningful recovery,” and even with continued treatment would die in the next few weeks from organ and heart failure. The judges agreed with a lower court that continuing treatment “serves only to protract his death.” Archie’s mother, Hollie Dance, said the family would “fight until the end,” but it was unclear what legal options they have left.
