(CNN)Air pollution may be associated with increased mental health disorders like anxiety and depression in children, a study has found. The study, published Wednesday in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal, found that short-term exposure to high ambient air pollution corresponded with a rise in visits to the children's psychiatric emergency department. Carried out over five years, the study said there was previous evidence linking harmful particulate matter with increased psychiatric disorders in adults, but that this effect on children's mental health has not yet been examined. The study focused on fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. The microscopic particles, which are smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can lodge deep into the lungs and pass into other organs and the bloodstream. They cause irritation, inflammation and can lead to respiratory problems, while longer term exposure can even cause cancer and heart attack. Psychosis in teens may be linked to an … [Read more...] about Air pollution is linked to anxiety and suicidal thoughts in children, study finds

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Gluten intolerance is a sensitivity to a family of proteins found in grains like wheat, rye and barley. It can cause symptoms that include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation. It now seems that gluten can affect more than just the person who eats it, reports Dr. Max Gomez. Danish scientists, after analyzing data from thousands of pregnant women, say a high gluten diet may put offspring at higher risk for type 1 diabetes. Doctors say children of women with the highest intake of wheat, rye, and barley proteins had double the diabetes risk. Air Pollution & Dementia Air pollution is known to lead to heart disease, miscarriages, premature birth and lung disease. Now British researchers are also linking air pollution to a higher risk of dementia. doctors tracking middle-aged and elderly patients for seven years found those living in the most polluted areas were 40-percent more likely to develop the … [Read more...] about Health Links Between Gluten And Diabetes, Air Pollution And Dementia
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook | Twitter NEW YORK (CNN) — Cruise ships generate high levels of air pollution that could endanger the health of passengers, staff and port communities, according to an undercover report released Thursday. On the decks of the four Carnival Corp. cruise ships studied over a two-year period, concentrations of particulate matter measured were “comparable to concentrations measured in polluted cities, including Beijing and Santiago,” according to Ryan Kennedy, author of the report and an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. ‘I Pray 24/7’: New Jersey Woman Who Has Outlived 3 Husbands And 3 Cardiologists Turns 103 Years Old Ship exhaust contains harmful constituents, including metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, many of which have toxic, possibly cancer-causing properties, Kennedy said: “It’s dangerous, it’s not a healthy thing for us to be … [Read more...] about Cruise Ships Generate High Levels Of Air Pollution That Could Endanger Health Of Passengers, Staff, Undercover Report Finds
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A high-pressure system trapping smoke over the Bay Area spurred the air district to issue the winter season’s first Spare the Air alerts for Saturday and Sunday. Burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors, is banned this weekend, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said. “Smoke from the 1.4 million fireplaces throughout the region can cause significant smoke buildup, similar to wildfire smoke, especially in inland valleys,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the air district. Cold temperatures, combined with calm winds can trap smoke and increase fine particulate pollution buildup inside and outside residences. Natural gas, propane or electric fireplaces are allowed during Winter Spare the Air Alerts. Exemptions to the wood-burning ban are available for homes without permanently installed heating, where wood stoves or fireplaces are the only source of heat. Anyone whose sole … [Read more...] about First Bay Area Winter Spare-the-Air Alert Issued for Saturday and Sunday
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — An air quality advisory has been issued for the Bay Area for Tuesday because smoke from the Ranch Fire will be in the air, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Smoke from the fire is likely to cause hazy skies and possibly increased hourly air quality readings for fine particles but is not expected to exceed federal health standards. The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for smoke for the Bay Area for tomorrow, 11/5.— Bay Area Air Quality (@AirDistrict) November 5, 2019 The Ranch Fire is in Tehama County south of Redding. Bay Area residents who smell smoke should avoid exposure to protect their health. Air quality officials said if possible stay indoors with windows and doors closed until the smoke subsides. Residents and drivers should also set their air conditioning units to re-circulate to prevent outside air from entering the home or vehicle. Smoke can irritate a person’s eyes and airways, cause a … [Read more...] about Air Quality Advisory Issued For Bay Area Due To Smoke From Ranch Fire In Tehama Co.
