The Google Play Store is unintentionally distributing a particular form of Android banking malware for the third time this year. BankBot first appeared in the official Android marketplace in April this year, was removed, and then was discovered to be have returned in September before being removed again. Now BankBot has appeared in the Google Play store yet again, having somehow bypassed the application vetting and security protocols for a third time. BankBot is designed to steal banking credentials and payment information. It tricks users into handing over their bank details by presenting an overlay window which looks identical to a bank's app login page. The malware is capable of identifying a variety of financial and retail mobile apps on the infected devices and tailors the phishing attack to display a fake version of the banking app the victim uses, if the target bank is recognized by the malware. Google has been collecting the location of Android phones even when location services are turned off, a Quartz investigation has revealed. Quartz observed Android phones collecting the addresses of nearby cellular towers and sending them back to Google. The details were collected even when location services were turned off on the phones, no mobile applications had been installed and there was no SIM card in the phone. "The result is that Google, the unit of Alphabet behind Android, has access to data about individuals' locations and their movements that go far beyond a reasonable consumer expectation of privacy," Quartz reporter Keith Collins writes. A Google spokesperson told Quartz that the cellular tower addresses were included in information sent to the system Google uses to manage push notifications and messages on Android phones for the past 11 months. They were never used or stored and the company is taking steps to end the practice, the spokesperson said. Samsung is expected to introduce the 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 and the 6.2-inch Galaxy S9+ next week just before Mobile World Congress starts in Barcelona on February 26. OMG Transit, a mobile tool designed to help Twin Cities residents navigate a growing number of transportation options, is now available as a standalone app on both iOS and Android. The tool was born a year ago when a team of local developers used Metro Transit data to more cleanly plot real-time bus arrival information. Since then, they have added Nice Ride, Car2Go and Zipcar to become more than just a transit app. "There’s so many different transit options that are all emerging and it’s becoming increasingly easier and easier for people to get around town and go completely car-free," said co-founder Matt Decuir. "And OMG Transit makes that even easier because we give you real-time information about all of your nearest transit options in one easy-to-use interface.” Within the app, users can view transportation options around them as a list or a map.
