Earth rapidly is approaching the point where the amount of warming locked in by human pollution exceeds the limits nations set last year at the international climate meeting in Paris, according to government-backed research unveiled Monday. The planet faces “committed warming” by 2.7 degrees before 2100 if fossil fuels are burned at current rates for another 15 years, the scientists based in Colorado and Germany determined. Even if people were able instantly to stop all further emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, the temperatures by the end of the century would increase by 2.3 degrees, the scientists said in a peer-reviewed analysis published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change. “Our work shows that there isn’t much more room for emissions before making those targets unachievable,” said Robert Pincus, an atmospheric scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, a partnership between the University of Colorado and the federal … [Read more...] about Inevitably hotter world: U.S. and German scientists calculate “committed warming” that cannot be stopped

Twice last week, the federal government’s unconstitutional spying on ordinary Americans was exposed. One of these revelations was made by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., who wrote that the FBI is still using warrantless spying in criminal cases, notwithstanding the Constitution and federal laws. The other revelation was a surprise even to those of us who monitor these things -- the United States Postal Service acknowledged that it has been spying on Americans. Here is the backstory . I spoke with staff writer Sarah Jones about what Biden didn’t address, why the Republican response to his policies is so muted, and more. Ben : During President Biden’s not–State of the Union speech on Wednesday night, he outlined a bold economic agenda for the coming months. A key element is the just-unveiled American Families Plan, which would use tax increases on the wealthy to fund a broad range of social programs, including family leave, preschool education, and more, dramatically reshaping the role of government in a lot of Americans’ lives. What do you make of this plan and Biden’s selling of it? Sarah : If Biden really does want an FDR-size presidency , this isn’t a bad way to start! The American Family Plan would just about bring the U.S. to the standard set by other industrialized nations on issues like family leave — and thus for the … [Read more...] about What Was Missing From Biden’s Speech
Ready to take over. Photo: Naomi Rahim/Getty Images Joe and Jill Biden confirmed in a new interview that a cat will soon be joining them at the White House, though it remains unclear how the Biden’s two German shepherds — including the now infamously nippy Major — will respond to the development. Speaking with Today , Jill Biden said of the cat that “she is waiting in the wings” to move in and insisted that the special training Major has received has included time in a shelter with cats. The president, meanwhile, denied that it was his idea to add the cat — and they refused to confirm when, exactly, the cat would arrive: To be clear, the news was also no cat in a bag: Adding a feline to the White House menagerie has long been part of the Bidens’ (or at least Jill Biden’s) plan to bring a new normalcy to the place. As Petsradar.com noted just after Inauguration Day , no cat has occupied the White House since India “Willie” Bush, a female American Shorthair who reigned … [Read more...] about White House Cat Imminent, Bidens Say
