New York (CNN Business) Believe it or not, people still order takeout using the phone. Applebee's doesn't want to take those calls anymore. It wants to outsource those orders to call centers, where a person or automated system will take your orders and also try to upsell you a little. More than half of Applebee's roughly 1,575 US locations already use call centers for phone orders, according to the company. By the end of the year, Applebee's wants most of its restaurants to get on board. "I'd like to get, in an ideal world, almost all of those [restaurants] to utilize the call center," Applebee's president John Cywinski told CNN Business in a recent interview. Of course, that doesn't mean that you can't call your local Applebee's if you have questions about, say, how busy the location is. In those cases, someone in the restaurant will be around to pick up. It may seem strange for restaurants to direct phone orders to third parties. But … [Read more...] about Applebee’s doesn’t want to answer your takeout calls anymore

Parris Island wages battles, not war, against climate change

(AP) — Rising seas are encroaching on one of America’s most storied military installations, where thousands of recruits are molded into Marines each year amid the salt marshes of South Carolina’s Lowcountry region. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is particularly vulnerable to flooding, coastal erosion and other impacts of climate change, a Defense Department-funded “resiliency review” noted last month. Some scientists project that by 2099, three-quarters of the island could be under water during high tides each day. Military authorities say they're confident they can keep the second-oldest Marine Corps base intact, for now, through small-scale changes to existing infrastructure projects. Maj. Marc Blair, Parris Island’s environmental director, describes this strategy as “the … [Read more...] about Parris Island wages battles, not war, against climate change
US sees risk of COVID supply rationing without more funds
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is planning for “dire” contingencies that could include rationing supplies of vaccines and treatments this fall if Congress doesn’t approve more money for fighting COVID-19. In public comments and private meetings on Capitol Hill, Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House coronavirus coordinator, has painted a dark picture in which the U.S. could be forced to cede many of the advances made against the coronavirus over the last two years and even the most vulnerable could face supply shortages. Biden administration officials have been warning for weeks that the country has spent nearly all the money in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that was dedicated directly to COVID-19 response. A small pool of money remains, and the administration faces critical decisions about how to spend it. That means tough decisions, like weighing whether to … [Read more...] about US sees risk of COVID supply rationing without more funds
Accountant retires on cruise ships to avoid cost of land living
When Angelyn Burk, a recently retired accountant, decided to crunch some numbers one evening last year, she made a stunning discovery: It would be cheaper for her and her husband to spend their retirement perpetually aboard cruise ships than to continue living on land. "This is how I want to retire," Angelyn, 53, decided in that moment. "Life is too short." She turned to her husband, Richard Burk, and said: "We can do this. Let's make cruise ships our home." To her delight, he was onboard. The couple had thoroughly enjoyed the nearly 10 cruises they had been on together in the past, and they have a mutual love for travel as well as a shared disdain for airports. They looked online and determined that, on average, they could string together voyages on various cruise ships for markedly less money than their collective cost of living on land. All they had to do was hop from ship to ship with some small breaks in between. "We calculated that we can probably live reasonably … [Read more...] about Accountant retires on cruise ships to avoid cost of land living

Billionaire’s Daughter-in-Law Seeks Donations to Fight Manslaughter Rap
The daughter-in-law of British billionaire Lord Michael Ashcroft is asking for donations to cover the cost of defending her against a manslaughter charge, saying that her bank accounts have been hacked. Jasmine Hartin was the social director at the posh Belize resort built by her common-law husband Andrew until she was arrested last month for fatally shooting police superintendent Henry Jemmott . Hartin has since had a spectacular falling-out with her partner over custody of their two children that briefly landed her back in prison , and a GoFundMe post by her family says she needs money just to live. “We just need help right now desperately,” the appeal says, promising to pay back any donations “in time.” The 32-year-old Canadian national admits she killed Jemmott after a post-party boozing session on a deserted pier in Belize’s tourist mecca, San Pedro. She claims that Jemmott was showing her how to use a gun for protection when it went off by accident. He ended … [Read more...] about Billionaire’s Daughter-in-Law Seeks Donations to Fight Manslaughter Rap
Lord Ashcroft’s Daughter-in-Law Breaks Silence on Shooting of Belize Cop
The British billionaire’s daughter-in-law who killed a top police officer in Belize is breaking her silence to tell the story of how she accidentally shot him—and how she is now locked in a battle to see her own children. “I feel like I’m living in a movie and I don’t know what the endgame is,” Jasmine Hartin , the partner of the son of Lord Michael Ashcroft, told the Daily Mail in her first interview since her arrest. Hartin is charged with manslaughter by negligence in the shooting death of Police Superintendent Henry Jemmott last month—a sensational case that has gripped the Central American country and made headlines around the world. Jemmott’s family has demanded she be charged with murder and suggested she got special treatment because of her connection to Ashcroft, who has extensive business holdings in Belize and is a major backer of the U.K.’s Conservative Party. But Hartin, 32, says the shooting was a pure accident —one sparked by the victim. By … [Read more...] about Lord Ashcroft’s Daughter-in-Law Breaks Silence on Shooting of Belize Cop
Socialite Insists in TV Tell-All: It’s ‘Ridiculous’ to Call Me a Murderer
Jasmine Hartin , the Canadian socialite and daughter-in-law of billionaire Lord Michael Ashcroft, is attempting to clear her reputation in a televised interview as she faces charges for killing a police superintendent in Belize . “People perceive me as being… this wild, crazy, party girl that’s hanging from the rafters,” she told CBS correspondent Peter Van Sant , during a special set to air on Oct. 2. “That’s not it at all. I’m a businesswoman. I’m a mother. I’m a friend... I’m a wife.” CBS spent three days in Belize reporting on Hartin, who insisted that she is “not a murderer.” “That’s ridiculous,” she added. The 32-year-old said she shot the police officer, her friend Henry Jemmott, in a tragic accident, after the pair had been drinking before heading to a local pier. Jemmott tried to teach Hartin how to use his Glock 17, she said, believing that she needed a firearm for personal protection. “‘Can you hand me the magazine from the gun?’” she recounted him … [Read more...] about Socialite Insists in TV Tell-All: It’s ‘Ridiculous’ to Call Me a Murderer
Dick Barnett whispers loudly
When you call his cell, or he calls you, the gravelly voice responds both as a statement and fact. “Barnett!” Dick Barnett – Dr. Dick Barnett – an owner of two championship rings with the Knicks and a Doctor of Education from Fordham University, is nothing but relentless when he wants to accomplish something worthwhile. Now 85 years of age, Barnett is the focus of a decades long obsession to tell the story of the first college basketball team to win three consecutive national championships. And no, it’s not John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins. It’s Barnett’s team. His squad, the Tennessee A&I State College Tigers (now Tennessee State University), is one of the many Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across this nation whose sports exploits have been forgotten. During the 1957-59 three-peat, the Tigers went 99-10 with team captain Barnett winning back-to-back NAIA tournament MVP awards. “They wouldn’t put us in the NCAA tournament,” recalls Barnett, a native … [Read more...] about Dick Barnett whispers loudly
