STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Workers in Bloomfield’s Amazon fulfillment center collected more than 5,000 tools and toys last week for donation to Materials for the Arts and the Department of Cultural Affairs. Materials for the Arts collects unneeded and unused items from businesses and individuals and redistributes the donations, for free, to nonprofit organizations with arts programming, government agencies and public schools. Products collected at the fulfillment center included “office supplies, home improvement tools, costumes, decorations and arts and crafts,” according to an Amazon spokeswoman.“We are always looking for ways to give back to the community,” the Amazon spokeswoman said. “We support Materials for the Arts with product donations so they can repurpose the items to benefit those in need."The spokeswoman said approximately 20 workers were involved in the effort to pick, pack and ship all of the items to Materials for the Arts.The Staten … [Read more...] about S.I. By BECKY GILLETTE In late December, Amazon announced that it will be locating its first Amazon Fulfillment Center in Mississippi in Marshall County creating 850 full-time jobs paying a minimum of $15 per hour plus benefits. The fulfillment center will cover 554,000 square feet of space that will be used to store, pick, pack and ship items such as lawn and garden products, toiletries, and other household consumer goods. Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Glenn McCullough, Jr. said Mississippi’s teamwork at the federal, state and local levels, Marshall County’s proximity to a distribution hub and the region’s skilled workforce were instrumental in Amazon’s decision to locate its new fulfillment center at the Chickasaw Trails Industrial Park, which is located about 27 miles from the Memphis International Airport. EUCLID, Ohio -- Road construction around the future Amazon fulfillment center at the former Euclid Square Mall is expected to begin next month, and the facility could open in spring 2019, Cuyahoga County officials say. Cuyahoga County Council is expected next week to approve $300,000 as part of a $1.3 million plan for construction of roads around the site. Karvo Companies, Inc. will likely begin work on Euclid Avenue, Babbitt Road, Lakeland Boulevard, St. Clair Avenue, East 260th Street and Bluestone Boulevard in Euclid soon after Oct. 1, a county spokeswoman said. The city of Euclid is paying for the remainder of the road work with about $1,050,000 in state grants, a council committee was told on Wednesday. The county is paying for its portion with funds from taxes on driver licenses.
