While the transaction was consummated off-market, records reveal the deal went down for $8.7 million, $700,000 more than the Swishers paid for the property about 2.5 years prior. With Brando, Maria Schneider, and Bertolucci on the Scandalous Set of ‘Last Tango in Paris’

· December 8, 2018 ·

PARIS—I was 19 when it rained and Marlon Brando told me he was at the end of his career, "making a fuck movie in Paris." It was November, largely grey and Bertolucci's crew had been sneaking around Passy in Paris' 16th arrondissement, filming Last Tango commando-style for a week, perhaps 10 days. They'd been spotted picking up exteriors: along the Seine, a shopping high street... A few days earlier, a classmate claimed to have seen Jean-Pierre Léaud running down rue de Passy. Another heard scenes were planned for some soon-to-be-demolished dance hall. On this particularly wet Wednesday morning, they hadn't yet been inside the large vacant apartment just downhill from the school I was nominally attending: the apartment where the film's obsessions play out. The O Word: Christopher Dickey on What Occupation Means Today

· December 6, 2011 ·

Some of America’s first homegrown terrorists were the original Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and they can teach us a lot about the trouble we’re in today at home and in the rest of the world. As these Christian night riders and cross-burners and lynch mobs of the Klan portrayed themselves, they were resistance fighters in an unequal struggle against foreign (that is, Northern) occupation after they lost their all-out war to secede from the Union in 1865. And they weren’t the only ones who felt that way. In a song I learned as a boy in Atlanta 100 years after Reconstruction, a “Good Ol’ Rebel” declares he “hates the ‘Glorious Union’—’tis dripping with our blood.” He hates the “Freedman’s Bureau” representing the interests of the emancipated slaves. He hates everything about the federal government, especially “the striped banner.” In one telling verse he declares, “300,000 Yankees … [Read more...] about The O Word: Christopher Dickey on What Occupation Means Today
