Josh Vitale Montgomery Advertiser Published 8:00 AM EDT Mar 28, 2019 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bryce Brown is, understandably, a little tired. It’s a little before 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Auburn just finished practice. The star senior shooting guard got up 250 shots in the gym before that. The team is scheduled to depart for Kansas City, Missouri, for a date with North Carolina in the Sweet 16 at 8:30 a.m. the next morning, and he needs to set aside at least some time for dinner, homework and sleep. But his father has come all this way. “Let’s just do a mini,” Cedric Brown says. “Ten makes, five spots,” his son responds. What happens over the next over the next 40 or so minutes inside a mostly empty Auburn Arena practice gym offers a glimpse into how Bryce Brown went from being a lightly-recruited three-star guard out of Stone Mountain, Georgia, to a two-time All-SEC honoree that has made more 3-pointers in his career than any player in program … [Read more...] about Bryce Brown’s path to shooting stardom starts when no one is watching
Josh Vitale Montgomery Advertiser Published 5:22 PM EST Nov 26, 2018 AUBURN — Bruce Pearl was asked often throughout last season about what he and his staff were doing to recruit the 2018 high school class. And throughout the season, the head coach’s answer was the same: “It's just not a strong class.” Auburn ended up bringing in one junior college transfer (backup point guard J’Von McCormick) and zero true freshmen. Some of that had to do with the players it knew it was bringing back. The rest had to do with the talent the coaching staff knew would be available in the 2019 recruiting class. “It was one we were planning on for several years,” Pearl said. “The 2018 high school class in the southern part of the country was just not very deep and we knew that for years, so we weren’t planning on having to go recruit that class heavily. When it’s a deep class, Auburn can do well. When it’s not a deep class, we just … [Read more...] about Bruce Pearl signs first top-10 recruiting class at Auburn

Josh Vitale Montgomery Advertiser Published 12:10 PM EDT Nov 2, 2018 AUBURN — The short introduction at the top of this week’s Mailbag was going to be about the University of Maryland. It was going to be about how it was unconscionable that the Board of Regents strong-armed university president Wallace Loh into reinstating 10-15 football coach who built a culture that led to the completely preventable death of a 19-year-old student-athlete named Jordan McNair. Fortunately, it’s not. It took 24 hours longer than it should have, but DJ Durkin is no longer Maryland’s head football coach. That’s the decision that needed to be made. Anyway, let’s get back to Auburn and this week’s Mailbag. As always, you can tweet me your questions each week. I will answer the best ones on Friday.
