Cory Diaz USA Today Network Published 8:45 p.m. UTC Jun 28, 2018 GRAMBLING – Mark your calendars GramFam, a couple of changes have been made to Grambling State’s 2018 football schedule. GSU’s home opener on Sept. 15 versus Bacone College, a school that avoided complete institutional shutdown this summer after cutting most of its operating expenses by eliminating athletics and laying off much of its faculty and staff, has officially come off the team’s 11-game slate. The back-to-back SWAC champions instead will use that week as an open date. That change moves the G-Men’s first home game of 2018 to the following week when they open up SWAC play hosting Alabama State Sept. 22 at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium for High School Day. Grambling opens the season with two road games, at UL Lafayette Sept. 1 to open the 2018 season and at Northwestern State Sept. 8 before being off the following week. Since the premature announcement of Bacone’s … [Read more...] about Grambling makes adjustments to football schedule

The Alabama High School Athletic Association has formally responded to a federal lawsuit by St. Paul's seeking to abolish the governing body's new competitive balance rule passed earlier this year. The brief, filed by the Montgomery firm of Melton, Espy & Williams, P.C., stated an injunction to suspend or abolish the rule would be an "extraordinary and drastic remedy" and would result in a "herculean task" by the AHSAA and its member schools to reclassify and re-schedule before the start of the 2018 athletic year. "It (St. Paul's) will not suffer any irreparable harm without an injunction," the brief stated. "The balance of harms weighs heavily in favor of the AHSAA, and a preliminary injunction would not be in the public interest." "Arbitrary" and "reckless" St. Paul's, a Mobile private school that won five AHSAA championships during the 2017-18 school year, filed a federal civil lawsuit May 24 against the AHSAA and Executive Director Steve Savarese. The school is … [Read more...] about AHSAA says injunction would trigger ‘Herculean effort’ for football schedules

Please note: The Associated Press preseason top-25 will be released later this month (our ballots are due soon). Also, consider this the last call for Pac-12 Network questions (go here) before I attempt to get answers from the conference office. Action: USA Today/Coaches’ preseason top-25 poll released Thursday with Oklahoma on top followed by Alabama and Oregon. Stanford is No. 6. It’s easy to dismiss the preseason polls as meaningless, but they aren’t. They set expectations that provide the basis for coaches to receive contract extensions (or walking papers), and they establish a loose pecking order for BCS admission. It’s much easier to finish in the top 14 (required for an at-large bid) if you’re ranked at the start of the season. That said, the preseason polls are hardly a model of accuracy: Last year, only four of the top-10 teams in the Coaches’ preseason poll were in the top 10 of Coaches’ postseason poll (Ohio State, Boise State, TCU … [Read more...] about Action/reaction: Coaches preseason top-25 poll, football scheduling, Stanford basketball and Vacate vs. K(?)
Now that Memphis has released its football schedule for 2018, let's break down what to take away from it with the Tigers looking to build on last year's 10-3 campaign. Remember, times and TV schedule will be released in June.Memphis has seven home games for the third consecutive year and it will only add to the excitement the Tigers generated after a historic 2017 season that ended with them ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. Before last season, a program-record 22,500 season tickets were sold so expect that number to increase, especially with more chances to watch the team.Pray for good weather? Last year's home season opener against Louisiana Monroe was a gnarly mix of wind and rain due to Hurricane Harvey that kept fans away. Cold rain also affected attendance hosting Tulane so one can hope that won't be a problem this year with seven home games for the third consecutive year.No Thursday games and everybody rejoices. The Tigers played twice on Thursday last year, both … [Read more...] about Analysis: First thoughts on Memphis’ 2018 football schedule
By Tarek Fattal | [email protected] | Daily News PUBLISHED: February 1, 2018 at 6:36 pm | UPDATED: February 1, 2018 at 6:41 pm It’s not common to see an Ivy League school and SEC school competing for a football recruit. But according to Chris Kirschner of SECCountry.com, it’s a “toss-up” between Princeton and Alabama for Paraclete quarterback Brevin White. White recently received an official offer from national champion Alabama and took a visit over the weekend to Tuscaloosa. White is a 4-star recruit, and ranked as the No. 12 pocket-passing quarterback in the country on ESPN.com. The senior is already committed to Princeton, a declaration he gave on July 25, but when Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban comes calling, it’s worth re-considering. “Talking to the coaches at Alabama, I think they want a quarterback who is going to go through his progressions — 1, 2, 3, 4 — and not a guy who is going to look at his first option and if … [Read more...] about Paraclete’s Brevin White gets late interest from Alabama football

Alabama is so deeply entrenched in the South that it doesn't need to go far to find a wealth of football talent to add to its championship-caliber program. So why the love for Arizona?Since last spring, four Arizona high school quarterbacks have been offered scholarships by the Crimson Tide, the latest coming on Tuesday night for Gilbert Perry senior and two-time All-Arizona QB Brock Purdy, the 2017 Ed Doherty Award winner and Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year.Last spring, Alabama offered Chandler Hamilton senior Tyler Shough, who signed with Oregon in December, and Phoenix Pinnacle junior Spencer Rattler, a Class of 2019 recruit who is committed to Oklahoma. Over the summer, Chandler junior Jacob Conover was offered by Alabama coach Nick Saban after working out for him."Our quarterback play out here is really good," said Mike Giovando, who has about 70 quarterbacks he works with in the Valley, including former Pinnacle standout Brian Lewerke, who was the MVP of the Holiday Bowl … [Read more...] about Why is Alabama football recruiting Arizona so much lately?

Nine of those 12 opponents are coming off bowl appearances. Here are some thoughts on every game next season:Sept. 1 vs. Alabama in Orlando, Florida: The opener is about as tough as it could be. The Cards begin the 2018 season at a neutral site against the defending national champions, who have not lost a season opener in 11 years under coach Nick Saban. The Crimson Tide have played the last six of those openers on neutral sites and have won all 11 by double digits. … Louisville, meanwhile, will break in a new starting quarterback and an almost entirely new defense.
