Walmart to convert majority of US hourly jobs to full-time positions
Walmart on Wednesday said it plans to convert the majority of its U.S. hourly jobs to full-time positions by the end of fiscal 2021 as part of its efforts to promote job stability and retain workers. Drew Holler, senior vice president of Walmart’s U.S. People Operations, outlined the plans in a blog post , writing that two-thirds of the Walmart roles that are currently hourly will eventually be “full-time with consistent schedules from week to week.” “We’re uniquely positioned to offer a combination of stability and room for growth that few others can match,” Holler wrote. “We are prioritizing consistent schedules, skills training and new pathways for growth, so all jobs at Walmart can lead to careers.” ADVERTISEMENT He went on to say that Walmart knows “offering more full-time opportunities along with skills, training and equipping associates with tools to make work easier will help us continue to attract and retain top talent.” Walmart, which has 1.6 … [Read more...] about Walmart to convert majority of US hourly jobs to full-time positions
In Wake of Several Mass Murders, Americans Once Again Debate Gun Ownership
NEW ORLEANS - In the wake of last month's deadly shootings in Colorado and Georgia, President Joe Biden recently announced six executive orders his administration believes will lead to some reduction in gun violence. The United States is unique among developed nations in the high number of gun-related deaths in the country. While nearly all Americans understand there's a problem, there are widely differing views on what's causing the epidemic of deaths, and how to solve it. Those contrasting opinions are on full display when discussing the March 22 mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado that left 10 innocent people dead. "Easy access to guns played a critical role in that shooting," explained Patrick Armstrong, whose father taught gun control law. Armstrong lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, which had the fourth-highest murder rate among large American cities in 2019. Armstrong said it's discouraging how easy it was for the suspect in Boulder to purchase the … [Read more...] about In Wake of Several Mass Murders, Americans Once Again Debate Gun Ownership
Donald Trump: FDA Pause of Johnson & Johnson Coronavirus Vaccine a ‘Terrible Disservice’ to the World
Former President Donald Trump condemned President Joe Biden’s administration for pausing the delivery of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine Tuesday. “The Biden Administration did a terrible disservice to people throughout the world by allowing the FDA and CDC to call a ‘pause’ in the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine,” Trump wrote in a statement sent to reporters. The decision to pause administration of the vaccine was announced by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday morning citing “extremely rare” cases of blood clots among recipients. Trump defended the “extraordinary” results of the vaccine but lamented the company’s vaccine would never recover its reputation after the pause was announced by federal regulators. The former president floated a theory that the decision was done for political reasons or due to “the FDA’s love for Pfizer.” “The FDA, especially with long-time bureaucrats within, has to be controlled,” he wrote. “They should … [Read more...] about Donald Trump: FDA Pause of Johnson & Johnson Coronavirus Vaccine a ‘Terrible Disservice’ to the World
Nanda: Talk of peace is slow in Afghanistan, but the U.S. must not abandon them now
Afghanistan continues to suffer from deadly violence while the historic Taliban-Afghan peace talks are underway thousands of miles away in Doha, Qatar. These U.S.-brokered talks follow the U.S.-Taliban agreement signed on Feb. 29, under which a “permanent and comprehensive ceasefire would be an item on the agenda of the intra-Afghan dialogue and negotiations” to discuss the terms of an eventual accord “over the future political roadmap of Afghanistan.” Other issues the agreement addressed were the withdrawal of U.S. troops, reduction of violence, and the Taliban commitment that al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations will not operate in Afghanistan. On its part, the U.S. agreed to reduce the number of troops from 12,000 to 8,600 within 135 days and to a phased withdrawal of all American soldiers over 14 months. President Donald Trump told reporters last week that U.S. service members in Afghanistan will be down “very shortly over the next couple of weeks, to 4,000 – less than … [Read more...] about Nanda: Talk of peace is slow in Afghanistan, but the U.S. must not abandon them now
