Bernard Schweitzer recently received a package of four health-related books from “University of California Berkeley White Papers,” along with a bill for $99.60. There were just a few things wrong.Schweitzer, 86, a West Los Angeles resident, says he never intentionally ordered any such materials. He has no ties to UC Berkeley. Schweitzer went to Caltech and received a PhD in engineering from UCLA. Advertisement The return address for the white papers wasn’t UC Berkeley but a post-office box in Palm Coast, Fla.And the fine print of the invoice said that by making a payment, Schweitzer would be automatically signed up to receive more such books at an additional cost.“It seems like someone is trying to make a lot of money here,” he told me.I did some digging. While the books are indeed from UC Berkeley, the campus’ School of Public Health hired a New York marketing company to gin up new business. Proper Hotel: Maximalist design meets historic San Francisco hotel digs
Whispers about San Francisco’s Proper Hotel have been circling for what seems like years. Next, news spread that Los Angeles’ Kelly Wearstler signed on as designer. Then we heard nothing … for a long time. But good things come to those who wait. The project, now five years in the making, is finally complete. Gentrification watchdog accused of violations in multi-million dollar SF home flip
San Francisco Planning Commissioner Dennis Richards, who has made a name for himself as a watchdog of building code scofflaws and a crusader against of gentrifying speculators, finds himself in an uncomfortable position these days. He is facing allegations that that an investment group he’s a member is guilty of what he publicly rails against: ignoring city planning and building codes to make millions of dollars on a quick real estate flip. Richards says that the violations were relatively minor and that he is being targeted because of his frequent criticism of the Department of Building Inspection. The fight, which has been simmering since September, flared up Wednesday night during a public hearing on the property’s permits. Richards is part of a group of investors, Six Dogs LLC, that attempted to get the city’s Board of Appeals to overturn a decision to yank the permits for 3426-3432 22nd St., a four-unit historic Italianate building near Guerrero Street. Six Dogs … [Read more...] about Gentrification watchdog accused of violations in multi-million dollar SF home flip
