Anti-texting and driving bills in Florida House and Senate find favor with Fort Myers drivers
A bill to allow police in Florida to pull over and ticket drivers who are texting while driving was labeled a good idea by drivers and others in Fort Myers.The Senate Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee voted 8-2 to back the bill Tuesday after a requirement about recording race and ethnicity was added to the bill.The amendment to collect the data would help determine if minorities are disproportionately ticketed for texting while driving.The proposal, which has now cleared three Senate panels, must get approved by the Appropriations Committee before it can go to the full Senate.The House version (HB 33), which does not have a similar race and ethnicity reporting requirement, is a priority of Speaker Richard Corcoran, R-Land O’ Lakes.Gov. A 28-year-old Fort Myers man was charged with DUI and hit-and-run involving a death after an early Saturday morning incident.According to Fort Myers police:Cameron Holmes struck Helen Heastie near the intersection of Colonial and Ortiz boulevards around 2:20 a.m. and then left the scene. Stunning footage obtained by a Florida news outlet shows a 21-year-old airport ground worker getting struck by lightning. The strike occurred on July 22 at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, Fla., and sent Austin Dunn, a subcontractor for the under-wing handling company Navstar, to the hospital for nearly two weeks, according to NBC2. The bolt of lightning first hit the plane and moved along the fuselage, right into Dunn’s body. He collapsed immediately and his co-workers can be seen searching for assistance. Dunn sustained third-degree burns across his body, but has been released from the hospital, NBC2 reports. His family recognized how lucky Dunn is to be alive after the fleeting but devastating event. “We knew he wouldn’t give up. Once we knew he was alive. Red Sox pitching prospect Kevin Steen was critically injured in a car crash Wednesday night in Florida. Steen, 20, who was drafted by Boston in the ninth round of the 2014 draft, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers after a vehicle crashed into his SUV at roughly 11:46 p.m. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the Dodge car that struck Steen crossed the median on Lee Boulevard in Lehigh Acres before going airborne and crashing into the front of Steen’s vehicle. The Dodge caught on fire and the driver died at the scene. Steen, a native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., began his minor-league career in Fort Myers with the Gulf Coast Red Sox in 2014 before advancing to the Single-A Lowell Spinners during the 2015 season. Yorman Landa, Minnesota Twins minor-league pitcher, dead at 22 after car accident in Venezuela
Yorman Landa, a minor-league pitcher in the Minnesota Twins organization, was killed in a car accident in Venezuela early Saturday morning. The team announced his death, but did not give details as to the cause. He was 22. Landa's agent Daniel Szew told the Pioneer Press that his client was in the passenger seat of the car when the vehicle struck a fallen tree on a dark, rainy night. His father was driving the car. Per Szew, Yorman Landa was the only fatality. His agent believed four or five people were in the car at the time of the crash. The accident that claimed Landa's life happened outside of Caracas, per MLB.com. "The Minnesota Twins are deeply saddened by the heartbreaking loss of Yorman Landa early this morning in Venezuela," Twins exec Derek Falvey said in a statement.
