One week before the 89th Academy Awards ceremony was set to take place in Hollywood on Sunday night, Feb. 26, a full-page ad appeared in the New York Times arts section on Feb. 17 listing Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin as one of “21 voices on why Lion is the Best Picture of the Year.” The ad includes a quote from Griffin praising “Lion,” a highly acclaimed film about an adopted child from India who, as a young adult, searches for his biological family and self-identity. The Academy Award, also known as the Oscar, for Best Picture is a top honor in cinema. Sometimes they get it right (think Moonlight, Schindler’s List, The Godfather), and sometimes they get it wrong (hi Crash, we see you). Regardless of who wins, being crowned Best Picture etches a film in history as part of an exclusive club that began in 1929 with the 1st Academy Awards, which honored films from 1927-1928. The award is voted on by members of the Academy. How the nominees have been determined has changed over the years, but voting has largely stayed the same. The number of films eligible for the category has also changed over the years, starting with three, then eight to twelve, then down to five, and now no more than ten. Only nine foreign-language films having ever been nominated (Grand Illusion in 1938, Z in 1969, The Emigrants in 1972, Cries and Whispers in 1973, The Postman in 1995, Life is Beautiful in 1998, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000, Letters from Iwo Jima in … [Read more...] about In Pictures: Every Best Picture Academy Award Winning Film

"Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" also won best director for Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, best original screenplay and best cinematography."Maybe next year the government will inflict immigration restrictions," said Innaritu, recalling last year's best director winner, Alfonso Cuaron. "Two Mexicans in a row. That's suspicious, I guess."The Oscar for best actor went to Eddie Redmayne, who tackled the … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Oscars 2015: “Birdman” wins best picture
