One week before the 89th Academy Awards ceremony was set to take place in Hollywood on Sunday night, Feb. 26, a full-page ad appeared in the New York Times arts section on Feb. 17 listing Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin as one of “21 voices on why Lion is the Best Picture of the Year.” The ad includes a quote from Griffin praising “Lion,” a highly acclaimed film about an adopted child from India who, as a young adult, searches for his biological family and self-identity. The Academy Award, also known as the Oscar, for Best Picture is a top honor in cinema. Sometimes they get it right (think Moonlight, Schindler’s List, The Godfather), and sometimes they get it wrong (hi Crash, we see you). Regardless of who wins, being crowned Best Picture etches a film in history as part of an exclusive club that began in 1929 with the 1st Academy Awards, which honored films from 1927-1928. The award is voted on by members of the Academy. How the nominees have been determined has changed over the years, but voting has largely stayed the same. The number of films eligible for the category has also changed over the years, starting with three, then eight to twelve, then down to five, and now no more than ten. ITHACA, NY - Cornell University has announced its graduation speaker next month will be filmmaker Ava DuVernay. DuVernay is the director of the Academy Award-nominated films "Selma" and "13th." She will speak at the university's senior convocation at noon May 26 at Schoellkopf Stadium, the university announced Thursday. The event is open to the public. "Ava DuVernay is an incredibly inspiring and accomplished activist, filmmaker and producer, and she truly represents our core values of inclusion, equality, humor and excellence," said Elizabeth Gorman, student chair of the Senior Convocation Committee, which chooses the speaker. DuVernay, a 1995 graduate of the University of California, directed "Selma," a film about the 1965 voting rights campaign led by Martin Luther King Jr. Selma was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2014, including best picture.
