Alexei Navalny Compares Putin To Voldemort After Court Rejects His Appeal

A Moscow court rejected Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s appeal and request to be released from captivity, meaning he will remain jailed for more than two years. While the court rejected Alexei Navalny’s appeal Saturday, the court reduced his sentence by two months to two years and six months, according to Politico . In a statement before the court, Navalny said he didn’t feel discouraged, but compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to the “Harry Potter” villain Voldemort. “The government’s task is to scare you and then persuade you that you are alone,” Navalny said during the hearing, according to USA Today . “Our Voldemort in his palace also wants me to feel cut off.” “To live is to risk it all. Otherwise, you’re just an inert chunk of randomly assembled molecules drifting wherever the universe blows you,” he added in reference to the popular show “Rick and Morty,” according to USA Today. Navalny also said he had come to believe in God during the … [Read more...] about Alexei Navalny Compares Putin To Voldemort After Court Rejects His Appeal

Dershowitz: Derek Chauvin Conviction Should Be Reversed on Appeal

Renowned defense attorney and Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Tuesday that the conviction of former Minneapolis, Minnesota, police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd should be overturned on appeal because of the public intimidation of the jury and the judge’s refusal to sequester the jury. Dershowitz noted the “outside influence” of people like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who encouraged unrest at a protest on Saturday night in nearby Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, if there was no murder conviction in the case. Chauvin was convicted Tuesday of all of the charges in the case — second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. Dershowitz told Newsmax: What was done to George Floyd by Officer Chauvin was inexcusable, morally. But the verdict is very questionable, because of the outside influences of people like Al Sharpton, and people like Maxine Waters. Their threats and intimidation, and hanging the sword of … [Read more...] about Dershowitz: Derek Chauvin Conviction Should Be Reversed on Appeal

Colorado Judge Natalie Chase Resigns After Admitting To Using N-Word And Saying All Lives Matter While At Work

(CNN) – Colorado District Judge Natalie Chase has resigned after she admitted using a racial slur in front of court employees, voiced her opinion on racial issues from the bench and asked employees to do personal tasks for her during work hours. The Colorado Supreme Court issued an order Friday in which it publicly censured Chase and accepted her resignation. Natalie Chase (credit: Colorado Office of Judicial Evaluation) According to the order, it stemmed from accounts from multiple court employees, cited in the order, given as part of an investigation by the Colorado Commission on Judicial Discipline. Leadership and accountability: A military lesson for police reform

Defense lawyers have a saying: “If the law is against you, pound on the facts; if the facts are against you, pound on the table.” For military defense lawyers, there is a slight modification: “Before you pound on the table, pound on the chain of command.” Why? Because in the military, leaders are accountable for the failures of their subordinates and military juries are the harshest critics of their colleagues whose leadership failures contribute to misconduct. Indeed, the Vanessa Guillen disappearance at Fort Hood, Texas, and its subsequent fallout, is a prime and recent example of how failures at low levels of the military result in accountability at high levels. With all the public attention focused on police reforms, as a former military officer and lawyer I find it perplexing why leadership accountability is not the central focus of this dialogue. How did a former police officer such as Derek Chauvin get to the point where he felt it was appropriate, as the prosecutor in … [Read more...] about Leadership and accountability: A military lesson for police reform

Big Tech set to defend app stores in antitrust hearing

Apple and Google’s market power over digital app stores will be in the hot seat Wednesday at the Senate Judiciary antitrust subcommittee’s hearing on app store fairness. The Silicon Valley giants have come under fire over their app stores’ policies, especially over the 15 to 30 percent fees they collect from app developers. Without alternatives to the Google and Apple stores on the companies’ products, developers are largely reliant on the systems they’re critical of to reach consumers. As Congress continues to weigh the market power of the companies, their controversial app store policies have prompted proposed state legislation to allow apps to circumvent the fees, as well as a key court case between Epic Games and Apple that is set to go to trial next month. ADVERTISEMENT “The abusive practices in the App Store are blatantly anti-competitive,” Mark Cooper, director of research at the Consumer Federation of America, told The Hill. “The platform operators and … [Read more...] about Big Tech set to defend app stores in antitrust hearing
