Robert A. Hanamirian, 80, international tax lawyer
Robert A. Hanamirian, 80, of Fort Washington and New York, the son of Armenian immigrants who rose to become an international tax lawyer, died Monday, June 25, of natural causes at his home in New York. From 2001 until 2018, Mr. Hanamirian was a tax lawyer with the firm of Kranjac Tripodi & Partners, LLP on Wall Street. For the past five years, he had also been of counsel at the Moorestown law firm run by his son, John M. Hanamirian. From 1995 to 2001, Mr. Hanamirian had operated a solo law firm from his Fort Washington home. A first-generation Armenian-American, Mr. Hanamirian was born in Philadelphia to Mooshegh and Hratcha Hanamirian, who fled the Ottoman Empire in 1915 in response to the slaughter of Armenian citizens by the Turks. The Armenian Genocide resulted in the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians in what is now the Republic of Turkey. His parents lived in China before reaching the United States in 1920. Kirkland Nabs KPMG Tax Lawyer for Houston Office
Tax lawyer R. David Wheat has left KPMG‘s tax group in Washington, D.C., to join Kirkland & Ellis as a partner in Houston. Wheat, who will start at Kirkland on May 31, works on corporate tax and financing transactions, particularly in the energy sector. He also advises clients on partnerships, limited liability companies and Sub C and Sub K entities, and the tax aspects of M&A, turnarounds and workouts, and tax controversies. He said that Kirkland tax partner Todd Maynes approached him about joining the firm in Houston, and he decided he could not pass up the opportunity. WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting head of the IRS says the current tax-filing season has gone well, while acknowledging the tough challenge the cash-strapped agency faces of administering the new tax law that will affect 2019 returns. Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter told Congress Thursday that some 79 million refunds totaling about $226 billion have been issued as of April 6, averaging $2,900 — up $13 from last year. Around 80 percent of returns filed claimed a refund. The agency’s so-called level of service for taxpayers calling for information is running close to 80 percent. That’s the number of toll-free callers who either talk to an IRS customer service rep or receive automated messages with tax information, divided by the total number of attempted calls. The final year under the “old” tax regime, 2017, has to be accounted for by taxpayers in returns by Tuesday.
