Click here to read the full article. In entertainment, as in sports, it’s all about timing. Which makes “ Legacy : The True Story of the LA Lakers” a victim of the TV industry’s current interest in its subject matter. (Perhaps that can be blamed on the ’80s Lakers being the most recognizable, and most accessible, team to build a series around in the wake of the smash success of the 2020 Michael Jordan docuseries “The Last Dance.” ) Jeanie Buss, the CEO of the NBA’s Lakers, has executive-produced Hulu ’s documentary tribute to the team that was already, this year, at the center of Apple TV+’s doc “They Call Me Magic,” about star Magic Johnson, and HBO’s scripted “Winning Time,” about her late father Jerry Buss ’ stewardship of the team. Anne Heche, TV, film and stage actor, dies at 53 from injuries sustained in LA car crash
LOS ANGELES — Anne Heche, the Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor whose work in “Six Days Seven Nights,” “Another World” and dozens of other projects dovetailed with a groundbreaking romance with Ellen DeGeneres that challenged homophobia in Hollywood, has died. She was 53. Her son Homer confirmed her death in a statement to the Los Angeles Times on Friday. “My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom. After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness,” he wrote. “Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom. “Over those six days, thousands of friends, family, and fans made their hearts known to me. I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley, and my stepmom Alexi who continue to be my rock during this time. Inside the Vault: A Former Bank in Vermont Transformed Into a Whimsical Gallery and Home
A magnificent home that's currently on the market was originally a bank , and it features original neoclassical details and an interactive vault space. Listed for $765,000, the 6,650-square-foot former Vermont Federal Bank on Main Street in downtown Bennington, VT , has served as Joel Lentzner 's home for many years. “It’s got a tremendous amount of history, and it’s at the center of our downtown,” Lentzner says. “I’m proud of how we’ve taken great effort to preserve the architectural details that are there—instead of just gutting it and making it a new space.” The original details include brass tear gas canisters (which were for protection and are now empty), beaded glass, marble counters, chandeliers, and clocks. “Preserving it was a big part of what we wanted to do," Lentzner says. "We'd love to see that continue with whoever buys it next.” Lentzner bought the property in 1999 and spent the next three years converting the lower level into a 3,700-square-foot … [Read more...] about Inside the Vault: A Former Bank in Vermont Transformed Into a Whimsical Gallery and Home

Column: Kevin Costner’s absence, Chicago Cubs executive cameos and other observations on the Field of Dreams telecast
It turns out you can stage a great infomercial for baseball, Iowa and Hollywood without the presence of the New York Yankees or a walk-off home run by Tim Anderson. Field of Dreams 2.0 once again lived up to expectations , though expectations were considerably lower this year with the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds playing a game that had no bearing on the National League playoff race. As a special TV event, the Fox telecast hit all the marks — plenty of stories about dads, videos of players shucking corn, a glowing full moon rising above the field and a sunset so Instagramable you’d think it was CGI. And if you lived in Chicago and also were able to catch the postgame news conference on Marquee Sports Network, you were treated to someone asking the Cubs how an organization could be so “blessed” as to get invites to both the Field of Dreams game and next summer’s game in London against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs marketing department couldn’t have scripted a question … [Read more...] about Column: Kevin Costner’s absence, Chicago Cubs executive cameos and other observations on the Field of Dreams telecast

Oakland deli with rich family history serves the tastiest cheap sandwiches
Elena Durante said stepping into her father’s store as a child overwhelmed her senses. Growing up in the family-run grocery business that sold everything from fine wines and olive oils to salt cod and big wheels of cheese, she described the sweet and peppery aromas of imported spices and remembers running her little fingers through barrels of dry beans. “There were so many products here in the ’60s. You’d smell every kind of spice,” she said. “I remember my dad coming home at night in his delivery van, and you couldn’t really get the smell of Ratto’s out of it. I can’t really describe it. Think of it as cheesy, fishy, briny, umami-ish.” Durante is the great-granddaughter of Giovanni Battista Ratto, the founder of the premier Oakland grocer, and the man behind its namesake since 1897. As a fourth-generation owner, she took over the business in 2002 from her father, Martin Durante, who had inherited Ratto’s in the ’50s from his own father, who was also named Martin Durante. … [Read more...] about Oakland deli with rich family history serves the tastiest cheap sandwiches
