According to the National Institutes of Health, about 60 percent of the average adult human body is made of water. This includes most of our brain, heart, lungs, muscles, skin and about 30 percent of bones. As one of the main ingredients in the recipe of human life, water regulates our internal temperature, transports nutrients throughout the body, assists in flushing waste, forms saliva, lubricates joints and even serves as a protective shock absorber for vital organs, including our brain, and the ever important fluid protecting the unborn child in the mother’s womb. Humans are constantly losing water from their bodies in exhaled breath, however, the primary loss occurs via sweat, urine and bowel movements. For proper body function, one must replenish the water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water. There is no dispute that water is crucial for a healthy life or any life at all, for that matter. 8 glasses of water a day myth
Water is the drink of life, and the mantra of “drink eight glasses a day” has been touted since childhood. Proper hydration and maximum health seem synonymous. However, new studies show that drinking eight glasses of water a day is misleading. However, most people have ignored the following sentence after that information in the report. The sentence states, “Mostly this quantity is contained in prepared foods,” meaning vegetables and fruits. Thus, your daily water intake should come from healthy foods. When taken out of the original context, the eight glasses myth opens up a nutritionary loophole. MYTH: JUICING IS A GREAT WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT FACT: Juicing to lose weight is a terrible idea. “This is not a good road to lasting weight loss,” explains Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area. There are so many reasons Gorin advises against juicing. “For one, drinking only juice would leave you short of the calories your body needs to optimally function. It may not be as sexy as juicing, if you really want to lose weight, Gorin recommends filling up on healthful foods instead. “Eat a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables, lean protein such as tofu or salmon, whole grains (oatmeal or quinoa are great picks), and healthy fats such as avocado and olive oil.” She also suggests cutting calories by limiting the … [Read more...] about Bad nutrition advice dietitians want you to forget

Health trends come and go — some helpful, some not so helpful, and some downright dangerous. CBS News asked medical experts about some of the popular trends they recommend ditching in 2017. Trend: Cooking with coconut oil “People seem to be eating it and drinking it with everything — adding it to coffee, cooking their vegetables with it — and it’s giving them large quantities of fat. I wish this trend would go away,” said Dr. Andrew Freeman, a cardiologist and director of Cardiovascular Prevention and Wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. The latest guidelines from the American College of Cardiology recommend against tropical oils, he said. Freeman is the chair of the American College of Cardiology’s nutrition and lifestyle working group.
