Memphis Commercial Appeal Published 6:54 PM EDT Sep 25, 2018 Memphis police say they responded to a man shooting at another man and his 8-months pregnant girlfriend last week while they were traveling westbound on I-40 near Warford Street. Laterrell Cline, 41, was identified by the alleged victims during a six-person photographic display days later. Police say Cline drove his 2001 Gold Lexus L43 into the lane of the two victims, striking their car's front bumper. Cline drove for half a mile and pulled over as he exited his car, while the driver he hit was still nearby. Police say he approached the male driver face-to-face. The male driver then asked Cline for his license and insurance but, the affidavit says, Cline walked back to his car and drove off. The male driver followed Cline to get his tag information. Cambridge native Rachel Morrison made a name for herself earlier this year when she became the first woman to be nominated for a best cinematography Oscar for her work on “Mudbound.” On Friday, Morrison stood out again, this time for an Instagram post discussing the stigma of working while pregnant. Morrison posted a photo of herself holding a camera and more than eight months pregnant. In the photo’s caption, she wrote that her impending due date doesn’t mean she has to stop working. “There’s a common misconception that likens pregnancy to some kind of disability— the idea that women who are pregnant shouldn’t be active and can’t go about their normal lives,” Morrison wrote. “While no two pregnancies are the same, I just want to say that for many to most women this isn’t the case at all. I just wrapped a feature #againstallenemies at 8+ months pregnant. Now I’m on to a commercial and I plan to keep … [Read more...] about Oscar-nominated, Cambridge-bred filmmaker shares powerful message about working while pregnant
Jonathan Bach Statesman Journal Published 3:01 p.m. UTC May 31, 2018 Salem officials refused Wednesday to fully explain why they waited four days to tell residents they had discovered toxins in the city's drinking water over the holiday weekend. Cyanotoxins in Salem's water were confirmed by an out-of-state lab Saturday, but city officials didn't tell the public, or issue a do-not-drink advisory, until Tuesday afternoon. The toxins stem from an algae bloom at Detroit Lake, where Salem and other nearby communities have gotten their water for decades. Cyanotoxins can cause allergic reactions, respiratory issues and severe illnesses such as liver and kidney damage. Since the alert went out warning that toxin levels were high enough to harm young children and medically fragile adults, residents have expressed outrage over the delay, both at public meetings and on social media. Among them is Allyson Wise, almost … [Read more...] about Why did Salem leaders wait 4 days to warn people about tainted tap water?
Whitney Woodworth Statesman Journal Published 1:14 p.m. UTC May 31, 2018 After toxins were discovered in Salem's drinking water, many parents were left wondering what the contamination meant for their babies and unborn children. Health officials warned pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under the age of 6 to not drink or cook with tap water. Three toxic algae blooms discovered in Detroit Lake led to the detection of high concentrations of the liver toxin microcystin and cylindrospermopsin on May 25. Four days later, the city issued an alert warning of the unsafe drinking water. Advisory: Salem drinking water contaminated, children shouldn't drink tap water The delay concerned many of those with elevated risks, including pregnant women like Allyson Wise. "It frustrates me that city officials appeared to know about the elevated toxin levels for a number of days, but only chose to alert people on the evening of the 29th," she … [Read more...] about What Salem’s contaminated water means for pregnant women, nursing moms
