When I tell Jeremiah Moss—whose name turns out to be a pseudonym—that I love his blog, Jeremiah's Vanishing New York, but also can’t bear it, he laughs. “I get that a lot: ‘I hate your blog, but can’t stop reading it.’” Through unadorned pictures—old signs, shuttered windows—and the odd, sad farewell notes of owners, Moss is cataloging the disappearance of small stores and local restaurants from New York’s streets and neighborhoods as rent hikes force them out and chain coffee shops and big, shiny, glass condos and office spaces replace them. Moss, who is in his “early 40s,” speaks quietly and seems a private fellow, if full of passion and anger about what he perceives as the dissolution of the city. Many seem to feel the same way, judging by the comments on the site and his almost 14,000 fans on Facebook. Moss started the blog in 2007, having moved to New York from a small, working-class New England town … [Read more...] about The End of New York: How One Blog Tracks the Disappearance of a Vibrant City

Newark sues New York over homeless relocation program
New York (CNN)The city of Newark, New Jersey, filed a federal lawsuit Monday against the city of New York to stop their program of relocating homeless residents to the Newark area. The lawsuit also lists New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Department of Social Services Commissioner Steven Banks as defendants. It claims that the Special One-Time Assistance program, also known as SOTA, had case workers pressure eligible people in shelters to move outside of New York City and didn't effectively check on the conditions of the apartments in which they were placed. It says that when SOTA recipients contacted SOTA case workers about the conditions and lack of action by landlords, case workers claimed they could no longer help them because they were now residents of Newark. "Newark is concerned about the living conditions of perhaps one thousand or more SOTA recipients," the lawsuit says. "From the small sample of SOTA recipients that Newark was able to identify, Newark has become aware of … [Read more...] about Newark sues New York over homeless relocation program

Will New York and California Take the Plunge on Single-Payer Health Care?
Hey, it could happen! Photo: Mike Groll/AP/Corbis Fed by health-policy chaos in Washington and dissatisfaction with aspects of both Obamacare and its proposed GOP replacements, New York and California are taking steps toward state-based single-payer health insurance systems that would provide universal coverage without insurance premiums, deductibles, or co-pays. In New York last week the State Assembly passed a single-payer proposal for the third consecutive year. Prospects for Senate passage have gone up significantly thanks to backing from the Independent Democratic Caucus that often holds the balance of power in the Republican-controlled chamber. In California, Democratic supermajorities in both legislative chambers have enhanced prospects for single payer among other progressive priorities, and a new bill has already cleared one hurdle in the lower chamber of the legislature. It gained some fresh attention recently when the nation’s most prominent single-payer proponent, … [Read more...] about Will New York and California Take the Plunge on Single-Payer Health Care?
