City plans from decades past often have a musty air. They’re laced with assumptions that sounded good at the time, but in hindsight run the gamut from frightening to lame. Then there are the ones with details that ring all too true — such as San Francisco’s downtown plan from 1963, with its succinct and thoroughly convincing case for why cars should be banned from Market Street. Which will finally start to happen in January — a lag of 57 years. The Market Street saga is a sobering reminder of how long it can take people to accept the obvious. It also underscores the way that basic realities of city life endure across generations, even as technologies and trends seem to mutate before our our eyes. I stumbled across “Downtown San Francisco: General Plan Proposals” last month, shortly after the legal deadline to challenge the city’s Better Market Street plan came and went with nobody filing an appeal. It’s an ambitious plan to do away with … [Read more...] about A visionary plan to rid SF’s Market Street of cars — in 1963. Sound familiar?
The co-owner of Burma Superstar, the Bay Area mini-chain known for tea leaf salads and block-long lines on San Francisco’s Clement Street, is planning to add a new restaurant on Mid-Market. Desmond Tan, who co-owns Burma Superstar with Joycelyn Lee, is taking over the former home of Oro, the modern American restaurant in San Francisco’s Mint Plaza that closed in 2016. Tan said the project is still in early stages. “It’s going to be a restaurant, but we don’t have a name for it yet,” he said. “I can just say that it’s definitely going to be a Burmese restaurant.” The area Tan and his team are targeting is arguably one of San Francisco’s more unpredictable neighborhoods when it comes to consistent restaurant growth. According to city data, restaurant and hotel sales tax revenue in the area between Fifth Street and Van Ness Avenue rose 155 percent between 2010 and 2015 — from $262,044 to $669,432. Even so, new restaurants … [Read more...] about Burma Superstar plans new San Francisco restaurant
Portuguese flavors are the heartbeat of a new Mission District restaurant Piri Pica opening today on Valencia Street. The joint venture between Uma Casa chef Telmo Faria, a native of Portugal, and Khalid Mushasha (Black Cat and Lolinda), is filling the old home of Frjtz (590 Valencia St.), the Mission spot known for its Belgian fries. It closed in January. Piri Pica’s menu is based around varying recipes of the smoky, spicy Portuguese dish piri piri chicken, the recipes of which were created by Faria. Whole, half or quarter grilled chickens are available in several styles: a mild version, a Piri Piri option (spicy), a lemon and herbs option (zesty), and lastly, Pica! Pica! Pica! (extra spicy). Among three sides is lighter fare like like cous cous, cabbage-herb slaw or wild rice. Everything is up for grabs either for dine-in, take-out, or delivery. Check out the full menu. The smoky piri piri chicken dish has a vibrantly diverse history. Sure, it’s Portuguese in origin, but … [Read more...] about Piri Pica brings Portuguese chicken to Valencia Street
