Nearly two years after Florida voters approved a referendum legalizing medical marijuana, dispensaries are still few and far between in the Sunshine State. Across Miami-Dade County, only five storefronts sell legal cannabis.In Miami Beach, the city's first — and so far only — marijuana dispensary, Surterra Wellness Center, opened on 4/20 at 1523 Alton Rd. At a meeting next Tuesday, the city's planning board will review an ordinance that sets the rules for Miami Beach dispensaries and lays out where new ones could be located. Originally, city commissioners hoped to limit the number of dispensaries to three, but last summer, state lawmakers passed legislation that essentially opened the door to an unlimited number of possible dispensaries in Miami Beach. Last week, New Times reported how an angry South Beach driver caught Beaching Towing tacking on a $40 "flatbed" fees after snatching his car — even though video clearly showed they never used a flatbed. Now, Miami Beach parking director Saul Frances says both Beach Towing and its competitor, Tremont, will be restricted in how they can add on those extra costs.From now on, Frances says, the two tow company's can only add on that $40 surcharge if they use a flatbed in public view with a "city agent" around to verify they're telling the truth. The change came about after Miami businessman Allyn Alford had his car towed by Beach Towing last week after he misread a sign. But when he went to pick up his car, he noticed Beach Towing had added on the $40 fee for using a flatbed or dolly to tow his car.
