‘Avatar’ Re-Release Beats ‘Mulan’ at the China Box Office
James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar is breaking records as it dwarfs Disney’s controversial ‘ Mulan in China. Avatar has retaken its position as the highest-grossing movie of all time, leaving even Avengers: Endgame behind on its wildly popular re-release run in the lead-up toward its impending December 2021 sequel. Now, Cameron’s record-breaking film is outperforming Disney’s widely criticized live-action remake of Mulan in China — where the latter movie is set. In its first ten days, Avatar grossed $44 million in China. Mulan grossed $41 million over the same period in September. Mulan was already fighting an uphill battle, after disastrous PR foibles and a lukewarm reception from American audiences. A disembodied voice responds: “The temperature in Zone 2 is 52 degrees.” “Set the heat to 68,” I say, and then I ask the gods of artificial intelligence to turn on the light. Many of us already live with AI, an array of unseen algorithms that control our Internet-connected devices, from smartphones to security cameras and cars that heat the seats before you’ve even stepped out of the house on a frigid morning. But, while we’ve seen the AI sun, we have yet to see it truly shine. Researchers liken the current state of the technology to cellphones of the 1990s: useful, but crude and cumbersome. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are urging Michiganders to get tested for COVID-19 upon returning from S pring B reak in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Students and families traveling across Michigan, to other states or out of the country risk being exposed to and carrying COVID-19 with them.
