It took Victor Osimhen all of 19 minutes to not only announce his arrival to Ligue 1, but to throw down the gauntlet to any and all competitors for the Nigeria number 9 jersey. And what a way to make that announcement for the new Lille man, who bagged a brace against FC Nantes in their season opener on the weekend. Nicolas Pepe... who? For the first goal, Jose Fonte's hoofed clearance all the way from the back looked anything but dangerous, especially as Osimhen was sandwiched between two defenders. But that was no problem for the young Nigerian. He brought it down off his chest, his slightly imperfect second touch dragged it away from the defender, and set him up for the finish. With 10 minutes to go, Osimhen struck again, this time from close range, to hand Lille all three points. It was the perfect start for the 20-year-old, who only joined the French side this offseason, tasked with filling the big boots left by the £72 million departure of Pepe to Arsenal. Trying to match the … [Read more...] about Can Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen cauterise Lille’s Pepe-shaped wound?
23 man nigeria squad
The 24 qualifiers for the expanded 2019 Africa Cup of Nations are naming their 23-man squads for the showpiece tournament. Find out below who is on the plane to Egypt, and remember that teams have until the day before their first game at the tournament to replace an injured player. ALGERIA: The Desert Foxes squad features just one Algeria-based player in Hicham Boudaoui, 19, who plays for Paradou. He helped his club to finish third in the Algerian league and claim a berth in the CAF Confederation Cup.. Haris Belkebla was selected initially but then dropped to "maintain discipline" after video footage of him appeared on social media exposing his backside on a live stream of an online game. The Brest midfielder apologised to the Algerian delegation, but was nonetheless sent home. He was replaced in the squad by France-born striker Andy Delort, who had surprisingly been omitted from the initial squad. Goalkeepers: Rais M'Bolhi (El Etifaq, Saudi Arabia), Azzedine Doukha (Al … [Read more...] about Afcon squads: Who will be on the plane to Egypt?
Nigeria's latest squad call-up once again brought disappointment for admirers of QPR's Ebere Eze. On Thursday, the Super Eagles named their 23-man squad to face Brazil in a prestigious friendly game scheduled for mid-October, with just one new addiction to the list in Slavia Prague's Peter Olayinka. It meant that, once again, there was no space for the 21-year old, who has shown such good form that there has been reports he could be an English Premier League player sooner rather than later, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly keeping close tabs. In midfield, where Ebere would have fit in, there was a recall for Granada's in-form starlet Ramon Azeez as Gernot Rohr named six midfielders. That is the most he has listed since just before the Africa Cup of Nations, an area of clear deficiency. Both call-ups are nothing if not thoroughly deserving. Former junior international Azeez, who was in Nigeria's 2014 FIFA World Cup squad before slipping into relative oblivion, showed such strong … [Read more...] about Seriously… What more does QPR’s Eze need to do to get a Nigeria call up?
Nigeria established themselves as the masters of the Africa Cup of Nations bronze-medal match, beating Tunisia 1-0 to claim their eighth third-place medal after Odion Ighalo poked home from close range. They also kept a clean sheet for only the third time in the tournament, something that will please Gernot Rohr. But there was something else to please the German, who set a record as the first Nigeria coach to use all 23 squad players in a tournament. That, and other takeaways from the game. Rohr sets the record When Henry Onyekuru came on as a substitute for Samuel Chukwueze in the semifinal vs. Algeria, there were only two players left who had not seen action for Nigeria at this tournament, and Rohr made it clear that both would yet do so. "I know myself what it means for a player to go to a tournament and not play, and it will be a good record for us if every player is to play," the German said at his pre-match news conference. - Africa Cup of Nations: All you need to knowFull … [Read more...] about Nigeria claim AFCON bronze over Tunisia as Rohr makes Super Eagles history
Nigeria defender Leon Balogun bristles, in jocular indignation, when the subject of his perceived lack of pace is broached. He considers it a personal affront, and he quickly rises to his own defence. "I need to correct that," he tells ESPN, just a few weeks out from the Africa Cup of Nations. "I think people are doing me wrong. It is just the way I run so people think I am slower. "But I am unfortunate that I play alongside guys like Ahmed Musa, who are really fast. You cannot believe how fast these guys are. So when people see me, they compare me to these guys and they say I am slow." Conceding that he will lose over short distances, Balogun insists he will keep pace over longer distances. "Over a short distance, they will probably kill me; my pace is not the first few metres, necessarily. But over a longer distance, I can catch up with them." Balogun noted as evidence of his speed that he "kept pace with one of their quickest players" - namely Anthony Martial -- in Brighton & … [Read more...] about Leon Balogun defends Nigeria’s Afcon chances, and his own reputation
