New Delhi (CNN)Fears are growing among India's 200 million Muslims that they could soon be classified as illegal immigrants under new, far-reaching government proposals. Earlier this year, authorities released an updated count of Indian nationals in the northeastern state of Assam, home to more than 30 million people. In order to make it onto the registry, residents had to provide the government with evidence that their families had migrated to India before March 24, 1971, around the start of the Bangladesh war of independence. A little over 1.9 million people didn't have the right documents. By any measure, 1.9 million is a large number, but it wasn't enough for those who had demanded the identification of undocumented people. Peabody Looks To Hire Interim School Superintendent By New Year
PEABODY, MA —The Peabody school committee hopes to have an interim superintendent in place when students return after the holiday break on Jan. 2. The school committee met in a closed decision Monday to map out a plan for replacing Superintendent Cara Murtagh and Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Assistant Principal Judie Maniatis, who died within days of one another last month.The school committee's vote Monday raised immediate speculation among parents that the board would tap former superintendent Herb Levine, who served as interim superintendent before Murtagh. Melissa Sumerour, 48, of Lorena, was found guilty by a federal jury following a five-day trial, DOJ officials said in a statement. Sumerour and co-defendant Latosha Morgan, 42, of Grand Prairie, billed the Department of Labor’s Office of Workers Compensation for more physical therapy work than was actually provided, officials said. Morgan has pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing in March 2020.
