Boston Celtics all-time greats Larry Bird and Bill Russell will introduce a couple of inductees at the 2018 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Inductions. Bird will present Dino Radja, who played his entire four-year NBA career with the Celtics. Radja, who was in Boston from 1993 to 1997 and was never actually teammates with Bird, also played in his home, now Croatia, during the 1980s and 1990s. He took Jugoplastika to two EuroLeague titles during that time. Russell will present Rick Welts, who is currently the Chief Operating Officer for the Golden State Warriors. Welts was CEO of the Phoenix Suns before that. He worked for the Seattle SuperSonics when Russell was the head coach there from 1973 to 1977. The two aforementioned Hall of Famers aren't the only two Celtics involved in the induction ceremony. Two-time champion and 1973 MVP Dave Cowens will present Charlie Scott, who was his teammate in Boston from 1975 to 1977. Scott also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, … [Read more...] about Larry Bird, Bill Russell amongst presenters at 2018 Hall of Fame inductions

By Susan Slusser Updated 6:57 pm PDT, Saturday, July 28, 2018 DENVER - Sunday is Hall-of-Fame induction day, and there’s an impressive class heading in - and one with some A’s ties. A’s quality-control coach Mark Kotsay will be in Cooperstown, N.Y., as part of Trevor Hoffman’s group; Kotsay was the closer’s teammate in San Diego and the two have remained close. “One of the best teammates I ever played with,’ Kotsay said. “Selfless, always put the team first even though he was in somewhat of an individual role. I’m honored to be there in his section.” Kotsay also played with Jim Thome (“a first-class individual, a sweetheart”) and Chipper Jones (“horn to be a Hall of Famer”) and he played against Vladimir Guerrero his entire career. “I tried to out-do him every year in throwing people out, because that’s the only category I could keep up with him in,” Kotsay said. … [Read more...] about A’s coach Mark Kotsay attending Hall of Fame inductions; other team ties
Lorenzo Reyes USA TODAY Published 9:48 p.m. UTC Jul 25, 2018 Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fired a shot at Terrell Owens, and the soon-to-be Hall of Fame receiver quickly struck back. Owens, who played for the Cowboys for three seasons from 2006-08, recently announced that he would celebrate his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame by delivering his acceptance speech at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Aug. 4 instead of in Canton, Ohio. “I had one of the great experiences that ever happened to me last year,” Jones said Wednesday of his Hall of Fame induction in 2017. “He did not ask my advice. Had he asked my advice or had I been compelled to, I would have shared with him that this is a mistake. For (his) own reasons, but more importantly because the fans should participate. I didn't give him that advice and consequentially you see where he's going, but he is making a mistake. That's his decision. Terrell, as you know, has a mind of … [Read more...] about Terrell Owens fires back at Jerry Jones for criticism on Hall of Fame induction absence
Kevin Foote Lafayette Daily Advertiser Published 3:55 p.m. UTC Jul 1, 2018 One of the craziest things to consider in life, and especially in sports, is the "what-if" game. I couldn't help but consider that exercise when watching out the 2018 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday at the Natchitoches Events Center. What a huge night for the Acadiana area and especially UL athletics. More: Springer’s journey to Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame began in a bookmobile There were more people from Cajun Country in the facility than any other area in the state — by far — producing the second-largest induction attendance ever. And why not? Sure the headliners for most sports fans were former Comeaux High and UL wide receiver Brandon Stokley and legendary area high school football coach Lewis Cook. But there was also former UL tennis coach Jerry Simmons and former Bassmasters champion Jack Hains of Rayne.
