WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday said it will not hear a case out of Pennsylvania related to the 2020 election, a case that had lingered while similar election challenges had already been rejected by the justices. The high court directed a lower court to dismiss the case as moot. READ MORE: Stimulus Check Latest: Will You Be Receiving A Plus-Up Payment? The justices had in February, after President Joe Biden’s inauguration, rejected a handful of cases related to the 2020 election. In the case, the court rejected Monday, however, the court had called for additional briefing that was not complete until the end of March. The case involved a federal court challenge to a Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision requiring election officials to receive and count mailed-in ballots that arrived up to three days after the election. More broadly, however, the case concerned whether state lawmakers or state courts get the last word about the manner in which federal elections are … [Read more...] about U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Pennsylvania’s Lingering 2020 Election Case

Supreme Court rejects case challenging Pennsylvania’s mail-in ballot deadline
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a case against Pennsylvania's handling of mail-in ballots, dispensing with yet another legal challenge over the 2020 election. The justices released an order Monday instructing a lower court to dismiss the case as moot. The order did not include an opinion or indicate which justices supported or opposed the move. A Republican congressional candidate and four individual voters filed a federal lawsuit against Pennsylvania elections officials in October after a state court ruled that mail-in ballots could be counted if they were received up to three days after Election Day, which legislators had established as the deadline. ADVERTISEMENT Democrats had sued in state court to have the deadline extended due to the expected increase in mail ballots because of the pandemic. The Republican candidate who brought the suit, Jim Bognet, lost his race against incumbent Rep. Supreme Court declines to take up three gun ownership cases
The Supreme Court on Monday denied appeals from three people who sought to have their right to own guns reinstated after being convicted of nonviolent crimes, a move that disappointed gun rights advocates. The denials, which were issued without comment or noted dissent, left intact lower court rulings which found that the lifetime bans did not run afoul of Second Amendment protections. One case involved a Pennsylvania man who sought to have his right to own a firearm restored after he was subjected to a lifetime ban following a misdemeanor conviction for driving under the influence in 2005. ADVERTISEMENT The other cases involved a Pennsylvania woman convicted of lying on her tax returns and a man convicted of copyright violations and smuggling counterfeit cassette tapes in 1987. For a case to be heard, or granted a writ of certiorari, at least four justices must vote to take up the case. The Supreme Court creates a new religious aristocracy
The Supreme Court has just created an aristocracy of the religious, who now can plausibly demand the right to defy almost any law. The Court has sometimes been willing to accommodate conscientious objectors, but its earlier decisions were nothing like what it has now done. By the Court’s logic, human sacrifice now presents a hard case, with a colorable argument for its protection. Tandon v. Newsom was a 5-4 decision against California's COVID-19 order limiting more than three households from gathering in homes. The Court declared that laws can’t be applied to religious objectors so long as the state “treats some comparable secular activities more favorably.” Some regard this as a de facto return to the old rule, in effect from 1963 to 1990, that religious conscientious objectors have a right to accommodation where that’s reasonably possible. What the Court has announced, however, is far more extravagant: a right to nullify even the most urgent laws. The Court declares … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court creates a new religious aristocracy
Justice Barrett Gets $2 Million Deal to Tell Readers What They Don’t Want to Hear
Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett has a cushy book deal. Photo: Pool/Getty Images This news from the publishing industry via Politico is pretty interesting: Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s last pick for the Supreme Court, has … sold a book — garnering a $2 million advance for a tome about how judges are not supposed to bring their personal feelings into how they rule, according to three publishing industry sources. The figure was “an eye-raising amount” for a Supreme Court justice and likely the most since book deals won by Clarence Thomas and Sandra Day O’Connor, one of the people added. You have to figure most of the people who will put down legal tender for a Barrett book are fans of her, of Donald Trump, and the cultural conservatism they believe she will eventually bring to the Court once she has settled in. Indeed, the reason her nomination was greeted with so many huzzahs from the Right is because it was assumed her “personal feelings” as an observant … [Read more...] about Justice Barrett Gets $2 Million Deal to Tell Readers What They Don’t Want to Hear
