A 7-year-old from Alabama – faced with the daunting cost of upcoming brain surgeries – has helped her family raise more than $315,000 to help pay for the procedures. Liza Scott was determined to alleviate some of the financial burdens off of her mother after finding out last month that she needs to have multiple surgeries to treat three rare brain malformations. So, she put her homemade lemonade stand to use. That stand, coupled with her online fundraiser, "Lemonade for Liza - Zest for Life w/ Brain Surgery " helped pave the way for her upcoming surgeries at Boston Children's Hospital. 8-YEAR-OLD WISCONSIN GIRL CREATES CHARITY TO HELP HOMELESS CHILDREN Liza Scott and her homemade lemonade stand at Savage's Bakery in Homewood, Alabama. 14-year-old boy charged with murder in shooting of woman in her SUV on Denver’s West Colfax Avenue
Denver prosecutors charged a 14-year-old boy with first-degree murder Monday, alleging he was the gunman who fired multiple shots into an SUV on West Colfax Avenue last month, striking the driver in the head at least once and killing her. The Denver District Attorney’s Office also charged 18-year-old Neshan Johnson — accused of driving the car the suspected shooter emerged from — with first-degree murder in the Feb. 20 shooting of Pamela Cabriales, 32. Prosecutors did not identify the 14-year-old because he’s a juvenile, though they’ve filed a motion seeking to transfer his case to adult court. According to a probable cause statement , Cabriales was sitting in her 2008 Land Rover SUV on West Colfax at Interstate 25 around 10:45 p.m. when, a witness told police, a suspect standing next to the passenger side of a dark four-door Honda fired a gun six times into the Range Rover before driving away. Cabriales suffered at least one gunshot to the head and was rushed to Denver … [Read more...] about 14-year-old boy charged with murder in shooting of woman in her SUV on Denver’s West Colfax Avenue
Blind In The Pandemic: Local Musician Noé Socha Faces Special Challenges Amid The COVID-19 Outbreak
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 29-year-old native of northern Italy, Noé Socha works as a musician in New York City. Playing guitar and harmonica in clubs was his main source of income until March of 2020. “When the pandemic started, I went from working six nights a week to nothing,” he said. While artists and musicians nationwide share in the professional uncertainty wrought by COVID-19 , Socha’s experience has been unlike most others—he is blind. He lost his vision as a baby, born several months early and given too much oxygen in the incubator. For him, living with this disability has made the pandemic especially isolating. “I don’t really feel comfortable going out on my own with this situation,” he said. “I saw three people in four months.” Before the pandemic, he relied on public transportation to get to regular gigs as far as Connecticut. GPS on his phone helped him navigate, and he was happy to approach strangers for help if questions arose. But in the days of social … [Read more...] about Blind In The Pandemic: Local Musician Noé Socha Faces Special Challenges Amid The COVID-19 Outbreak

Give Biden a Break
Biden hasn’t exactly been taking it easy in his first days as president. Photo: Kevin Dietsch/UPI/Bloomberg via Getty Images Joe Biden has been president of the United States for 43 days. He inherited power from a predecessor who was trying to overturn the 2020 election results via insurrection just two weeks before Inaugural Day, and whose appointees refused the kind of routine transition cooperation other administrations took for granted. His party has a four-vote margin of control in the House, and only controls the Senate via the vice presidential tie-breaking vote (along with a power-sharing arrangement with Republicans). Democratic control of the Senate was not assured until the wee hours of January 6 when the results of the Georgia runoff were clear. Biden took office in the midst of a COVID-19 winter surge, a national crisis over vaccine distribution, and flagging economic indicators. Biden named all his major appointees well before taking office, and as recommended by … [Read more...] about Give Biden a Break
