As state regulators look into the high costs utilities paid last week to keep people warm and keep the lights on, Gov. Jared Polis has issued a strong warning against passing along “unexpected exceptional costs” to customers. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission is investigating how utilities responded to the frigid weather that left millions in Texas without power. Colorado didn’t experience the kinds of outages that plagued other states. However, utilities, concerned about the taxed electric grid, did ask customers to conserve and ended up paying much higher prices for natural gas. Xcel Energy-Colorado , the state’s largest electric utility, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had to spend an extra $650 million in electricity and natural gas costs. Atmos Energy Corp., a Dallas-based natural gas distributer serving eight states, said in a filing submitted to the PUC that it experienced “unforeseeable and unprecedented market pricing for gas … [Read more...] about Polis urges regulators not to stick Colorado utility customers with bills racked up during deep freeze

Hungary Becomes First Country in Europe to Administer Chinese Sinopharm Vaccine
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) – Doctors in Hungary on Wednesday began administering a COVID-19 vaccine developed in China, making the country the first European Union nation to use a Chinese jab as officials aim to bolster trust in its safety and effectiveness. General practitioners around the Central European country were instructed to administer the shots, developed by Chinese state-owned company Sinopharm, to elderly patients. The Sinopharm jab brings the number of vaccines currently in use in Hungary to five including the Russian-developed Sputnik V, more than in any other country in the 27-nation EU. Paxton replied, “We definitely are looking at [DeSantis’s proposal]. We’re trying to encourage our legislature to do something similar [in Texas], because I feel like [Big Tech] have had exemption from liability that they they shouldn’t have had, especially being in the monopolistic position they are in.” “Our focus is on lawsuits,” Paxton continued. “We’ve sued Google for … [Read more...] about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton: We Think Our Antitrust Lawsuit Against Google Will Succeed
