Pack of 10 or more teens chases, stabs 15-year-old boy on Brooklyn playground

A gang of teens stabbed a 15-year-old boy in the chest with a kitchen knife on a Brooklyn basketball court after cornering him and pummeling whim with bottles and sticks Friday, police and a witness said. The victim tried desperately to escape over a fence as the group of 10 to 20 blocked the exits of the Bushwick court and closed in on him, wielding sticks and bottles about 6:30 p.m., a frightened teen who saw the incident unfold told the Daily News. A bloody knife was remained on the basketball court after the mass of kids scattered from the playground. "They grabbed him and they pulled him down. They started kicking him and beating him with sticks,” said the young witness who said she was terrified by the ordeal. "I was scared. I ran back inside into the house. I couldn't believe it, it was crazy,” she added, saying the attackers shouted about a gang affiliation. Police said the victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital for treatment. 15-year-old boy pleads not guilty in fatal stabbing

WAUSAU – A 15-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing a 13-year-old boy in February pleaded not guilty Thursday to a first-degree reckless homicide charge and will be tried in the adult courts.Dylan Yang is accused of stabbing Isaiah Powell twice in the back Feb. 27 during a fight that started online and then erupted outside Yang's home, according to court records. He is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and faces up to 60 years in prison, according to the criminal complaint.Yang's Thursday hearing was intended to determine whether he would remain in the adult court system, where all homicide cases begin, or would be sent to the juvenile court system, where he would face a substantially lower penalty —five years in juvenile confinement — if convicted, Yang's attorney Jay Kronenwetter said. No evidence was presented Thursday supporting a move to juvenile court and Kronenwetter said Yang wants the case to go to a jury trial.Yang told police that the fight broke out when Powell and other youth drove to Yang's home and began shooting a BB gun at Yang and others, according to court records. Yang then went into his house to grab a knife. Powell was tackled by a different youth, and as Powell was getting up, Yang stabbed Powell in the back, according to the complaint. The knife was 13.75 inches long, with a 9.5-inch blade that measured 1.75 inches at its widest point, according to the complaint.Yang and several other youths exchanged messages throughout the day of the stabbing to arrange a fight between Powell's gang, the Young Reckless Squad and Yang's gang, the Oriental True Bloods, according to the criminal complaint.Yang said in court that he understood the implications of abandoning his attempt to move to the juvenile system, but Kronenwetter said he has concerns over a 15-year-old making decisions he would not otherwise be able to make legally."The only context where he's competent (to engage in legal action) is in regard to being charged Continue Reading

State Senator Carl Kruger steps into investigation of 15-year-old boy’s rooftop death

Cops are investigating the death of a 15-year-old boy who fell from the roof of a Brooklyn school - and a state pol is being blasted for injecting himself into the probe. Nick Gryak fell five stories into a shaft from atop Roy H. Mann Intermediate School Tuesday night, officials said. Friends said the roof is a hangout for kids who climb up using scaffolding that's been there since November. While there's been no suggestion that drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident, state Sen. Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) visited the school yesterday to say the school is troubled. "Neighbors have complained about drinking and drug activity at the school for years," said Kruger. "This tragedy highlights the need to improved security at the school." An Education Department source complained that Kruger "barged" into a meeting in the principal's office and dropped off empty cans of alcohol he found. "Nothing was supposed to be touched as there is a police investigation going on, so he basically just tampered with evidence," said the source. Kruger said he saw no crime tape. Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said guards watch over the school at night, adding: "The incident is under investigation, and the school is cooperating with police." Gryak's grieving friends left a shrine in the playground with candles and stuffed animals "He was a good kid who just got unlucky," said pal Frank Brannan, 15, of Bergen Beach. ‘Statistics don’t have anything to do with my son,’ says mother of slain 15-year-old boy

The city's bump in homicides this year means little to Wendy Jamison, whose focus remains on a single slaying: the July shooting death of her 15-year-old boy. "Those statistics don't have anything to do with my son," she said yesterday as the family prepared for its first Christmas without her slain child, Tyquan. "It's hard around the holidays," Jamison said in their Brooklyn apartment. "He was just an innocent boy." Tyquan Jamison was shooting hoops outside a storefront church in Brownsville when a wayward bullet intended for his friend instead tore into the teen's upper body. The shot was fired by a killer riding with a group of young men about 3:30 a.m. Their car stopped outside the Disciple Faith Church of God, where a bleeding Tyquan was left sprawled across the ground as the shooter sped away. The junior varsity basketball player died a short time later at Brookdale University Hospital - one of three Brooklyn murders in just five hours on July 19. Unlike the majority of city homicide victims, drugs were not a factor in Tyquan's death. "My son wasn't on drugs or in any kind of trouble," said his mother, whose Christmas tree won't hold any gifts for Tyquan this year. "My son was just playing basketball when he got shot." His basketball coach described Tyquan as a talented and hardworking kid. The killer remains at large nearly five months after the tragedy. "Whoever killed my cousin is still out there," said an angry Terrance Staton, 32. Join the Conversation: Continue Reading

Teen shot dead at Newark Blessing of the Bikes is identified as 15-year-old boy

The teen killed in the Newark Blessing of the Bikes shooting was identified Monday as a 15-year-old boy, officials said. Al-Shakeen Woodson, of Newark, N.J., was killed when gunfire erupted about 7:45 p.m. Sunday at the Newark Knights motorcycle club event, officials said. Three adult men were wounded and are expected to survive, Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly said Monday. Witness Keona Campbell told CBS2 the teen was gunned down right in front of her. "There was about eight to 12 shots that rang out," she said. "The guy he ran, he fell on the ground and he was gone." She said she performed CPR on the boy, who was shot multiple times in the head. "I have children of my own, and if that was my baby, I would want someone to help him along," she said. "Two years ago, my brother was murdered on the streets of Newark. And I would hope that somebody would've helped my brother." The mayor said there wasn't enough police manpower for the festival that marks the start of the riding season. "We don't have the resources or the personnel to manage an event of this size of this caliber in this city and we can't have it until we do," Mayor Ras Baraka said. He added that he was not informed about the planning process, and that the event should never have been approved. It was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. The shooting happened at an intersection near the bike club house. The Newark Police Department didn't immediately respond to a telephone message seeking details.
