( CBSLA ) — It was an eventful opening weekend for Major League Baseball. All but two teams got in their first series, which, in the age of COVID, has to be considered a success. Some teams, like the Philadelphia Phillies have looked good. Other teams, like the Oakland A’s, have not. Ultimately, it’s still way too early in a 162-game season to draw any real conclusions. There’s a lot of baseball left to be played. This week’s Baseball Report looks at Shohei Ohtani’s first two-way start of the season, MLB’s decision to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta and the Washington Nationals-New York Mets series that didn’t happen. Baseball Report: J.D. Martinez, Red Sox On Fire
( CBS Boston ) — It’s been an exciting week of baseball, even though the calendar still says mid-April. Two weeks in is far too early to draw any real conclusions from the standings or the play that led to those wins and losses. But it’s the perfect time to look at some of the action making headlines. MLB already has its first three-home run game this season, courtesy of Boston Red Sox’s J.D. Martinez. It also has its first no-hitter so far, thanks to San Diego Padres’ Joe Musgrove. And what would a week in baseball be without a little controversy? The Philadelphia Phillies edged out the Atlanta Braves on a call at the plate that could have easily gone the other way. Soccer sex abuse scandal: Report is ‘kick in the teeth’ for survivors, says Paul Stewart
(CNN) Paul Stewart played for the England international team and some of English football's leading clubs, notably Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. It's a career to be proud of, but Stewart's memories are often consumed by the horrific daily cruelty he says he suffered between the ages of 11 and 15 as a youth footballer. Stewart is one of hundreds of footballers dealing with the consequences of childhood sexual abuse that occurred within the game as they strived to become professional players. This week, Stewart says he'd hoped to find solace in the independent review from prominent lawyer Clive Sheldon, commissioned by the Football Association (FA), into the scandal. Instead, he says survivors of this sexual abuse have suffered "another kick in the teeth" following the release of a report detailing the "significant institutional failings" from English football's authorities. US-led sanctions on Venezuela “devastating” to human rights, says UN report
(CNN) A United Nations Special Rapporteur has issued a scathing report on the international pressure campaign on Venezuela , calling on the United States, United Kingdom and European Union to lift "devastating" economic sanctions. The comments conclude a 12-day trip in the country by Alina Douhan, Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures . Speaking in Caracas on Friday, she said foreign sanctions "constitute violations of international law" and have exacerbated Venezuela's economic crisis with "ineffective and insufficient" carve-outs for humanitarian issues. Her preliminary report, released Friday, painted a grim picture of a nation trapped with insufficient food or electricity, water rationing and little or no access to medicines and vaccines. Read More Venezuela's state-controlled economy began to decline in 2014 with falling oil prices and has been corroded by mismanagement and corruption.
