(WRDW/WAGT) -- Star gazing is hitting prime time. There are currently three active meteor showers: the Southern Delta Aquariids, the Alpha Capricornids, and the Perseids. Perseids The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers of the year. During this time of year, Earth enters into an area of space with debris left behind from Comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet leaves behind a trail of debris that Earth passes through every year. These tiny pieces of space debris enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up due to friction. As the meteors burn up in our atmosphere it creates the shooting star phenomena. The Perseids are swift moving meteors will velocities around 37 miles per second! This shower will have a strong peak August 12-13 with meteor rates at 50-75 per hour. Viewing is best when the constellation Perseus is high in the sky. It’s hot outside, which is why forecasters at State College issued a warning starting Friday for central Pennsylvania residents.An excessive heat warning will start tomorrow at noon and end at 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. In addition to the warning, forecasters say a heat advisory has also been issued starting at 8 p.m. Saturday and ending at 8 p.m. Sunday.Excessive heat warnings are issued when conditions are dangerous to life and property. Temperatures are anticipated to reach up to 110 on Friday and up to 104 on Sunday, forecasters said. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Temperatures in Northeast Ohio are expected to hit the mid-90′s on Friday and Saturday, but how can you tell when the heat is becoming dangerous?Northeast Ohio will be under an extreme heat warning from Friday at noon until Saturday at 8 p.m., which by National Weather Service standards means that heat and humidity is likely to cause heat-related stress or illness if you’re exposed for too long or exert yourself too much outdoors. More than a dozen cars had to be pulled out of standing water along Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City when torrential rains — the remnants of Hurricane Barry — hit Hudson County Wednesday night, authorities said.The Jersey City police and fire departments responded to 14 calls of stranded motorists, and with the help of a private tow company, pulled the cars from the water.There were also some branches and tree limbs that came down in the storm, which featured some high wind gusts. Some limbs of a tree on Emory Street fell and damaged a handful of cars, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. Syracuse, N.Y. -- The National Weather Service has extended a hot weather alert to include Central New York on Friday and Saturday.The heat index could surpass 100 degrees both days, and possibly reach 110 degrees Saturday afternoon. An excessive heat watch has been issued from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Oneida, Yates, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Madison, Oneida, Cortland, Tioga and Broome counties. “The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure,” said the watch, issued by the weather service office in Binghamton.The heat index is a calculation of how the combination of heat and humidity affect the body’s ability to cool off.
