By Gary Richards | [email protected] | Bay Area News GroupPUBLISHED: April 1, 2019 at 6:00 am | UPDATED: April 1, 2019 at 6:06 am Pardon me. But Mr. Roadshow is misty-eyed these days. After 13 years and nearly 160,000 miles, we’re donating our Prius hybrid — my favorite car ever — to charity. And — yikes — we’re not ruling out getting an SUV. I’ve written countless times about my love for this still shiny black four-door that has been the subject of many Roadshow debates and articles. Some loved it; others got fed up reading so much on the Prius. But life moves on. There’s Ollie, our nine-month grandson with his needs for a car seat, stroller and other baby gear. Plus my wheelchair requires space as well as the equipment to lift me more easily in and out. Mrs. Roadshow and I hadn’t planned to go the hybrid route. Back in 2006, we worried the technology was unproven and how many mechanics could handle repair needs? But … [Read more...] about Mr. Roadshow says farewell to his beloved Prius: Roadshow
By Gary Richards | [email protected] | Bay Area News GroupPUBLISHED: April 16, 2019 at 7:00 am | UPDATED: April 16, 2019 at 7:11 am Q: Are there plans to improve traffic and congestion conditions on Saratoga Avenue at Interstate 280 in San Jose? The timing of the lights is atrocious with cars blocking traffic trying to make that left turn near Moorpark Avenue, cars blocking traffic at Kiely and Saratoga, dive bombers trying to get in at the last second or doing their own makeshift right turn lane onto 280 south from northbound Saratoga and so on. Please tell me that *someone* higher up is thinking of us poor plebeians and have been trying to find a solution to ease our woes. Diana Trinh, San Jose A: This interchange has become the latest hot spot in the South Bay judging by my email inbox. Q:I just spent 15 minutes trying to exit 280 north at Saratoga Avenue. The off-ramps are a nightmare almost any time of day. Why? Has anyone tried to analyze the why of this and sought … [Read more...] about Help coming to I-280 and Saratoga Avenue mess: Mr. Roadshow
By Gary Richards | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group May 19, 2019 at 5:45 am Q: You cannot in all sanity drop a bomb like “some highway widening on Highway 101 in the South Bay” without giving us a few scraps of details! Geez! Dave Singletary, Gilroy A: Geez is right. Here are a few scraps, albeit expensive ones, regarding more express lanes and transit coming over the next decade. Extending carpool lanes between Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Extending carpool lanes from Highway 85 to Interstate 380 and converting them to express lanes. Adding auxiliary lanes from Great America Parkway to Lawrence Expressway and from Ellis Street to Highway 237. Add a second exit lane from south 101 to south 87. New interchanges at Zanker Road and Buena Vista Avenue. Upgrade interchanges at Highway 25, Old Oakland Road, Woodside Road and Shoreline Boulevard. Q: Highway 101 is a scary drive south of Gilroy where drivers can make risky left turns from side roads. Any plans … [Read more...] about Highway 101 widening? How about some details, Mr. Roadshow?
By Gary Richards | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: August 7, 2019 at 5:45 am | UPDATED: August 7, 2019 at 5:59 am Q: I’ve been reading you and your reader comments about waiting three seconds before entering an intersection when the light turns green. While you and your readers all have good intentions, sadly, all of you are wrong. Why, you ask? Well, the logic of waiting three seconds sounds good at first blush but does not make sense. The correct answer is to take a brief moment and look both ways before taking off. I’m not talking about glancing both directions but actually looking down the road both ways and you can see if a car is going to shoot the light. I always look both ways before entering an intersection even if I’m in the middle of a pack of cars going through on the green light. Larry Schwarcz, Campbell A: This idea of waiting several seconds almost blew up my email. Many busy intersections have a short pause where all … [Read more...] about The ‘three-second rule’ blows up Mr. Roadshow’s email
By Gary Richards | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group August 5, 2018 at 5:45 am Q: Thank you, Mrs Roadshow, for the heart felt message about Road Boulders blocking your way as you rushed to see your dying father in Iowa. Everything you wrote was so true. We can’t judge other drivers. Road Boulders, just move out of the way. Susan Martinez A: Jan’s account drew a ton of responses, almost all in support of her plea for drivers in the fast lane to move right if being passed. Q: Mrs. Roadshow’s story was particularly poignant, demonstrating (again) the Road Boulder just doesn’t know the situation. Could be parents trying to make it to the hospital before their child makes it’s debut into the world, or a friend trying to get a victim to the E.R. You just never know. S. N.San Jose A: And … Q: Mrs. Roadshow, thank you for printing this personal, poignant story. In this day when so many of us think only of ourselves, perhaps it will be … [Read more...] about Mrs. Roadshow’s Road Boulder saga gets support: Roadshow
