FLEISCHMAN: GOP Votes Give Jerry Brown Big Win on Cap-and-Trade
The “shadow presidency” of California Governor Jerry Brown scored a win Monday night as eight Republican legislators crossed the political aisle and voted with most Democrats to extend a key component of the “cap-and-trade” program that has literally shifted $4.42 billion from the private sector to the government since mid-2012. While a lot of politicking went into rounding up the votes for the cap-and -trade extension among both political party caucuses in both chambers, it was clear that Governor Brown had enough political capital, along with a willingness to “strategically target” the spending of Cap and Trade tax dollars to woo Democrats. So in the final days preceding a vote, much of the attention was focused on Republican legislators. Because it is a tax increase, the bill required a two-thirds vote to pass. Democrats have barely over two-thirds in either chamber and so, in theory, could have passed it without a solitary GOP vote. But Democrats were not 100% unified, and … [Read more...] about FLEISCHMAN: GOP Votes Give Jerry Brown Big Win on Cap-and-Trade
GOP House Members Accuse John Kerry of ‘Abuse of Power’ for Pressing Banks to Deny Funding for Fossil Fuel Entities
On the eve of Earth Day, 45 members of the U.S. House of Representatives delivered a letter to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry accusing him of “abuse of power” for leaning on banks and other financial institutions to deny funding for fossil fuel-related entities in the name of fighting climate change. “We write to you to express concern with your decision, as reported in the press, to pressure U.S. banks to make radical, overly prescriptive commitments related to climate change that may not be in the best interest of their businesses, shareholders, employees or customers.1 Such pressure from a senior Administration official is a blatant abuse of power,” the letter said. “Your actions, and the broader actions of the Biden Administration on financial regulation, threaten to compromise the competitiveness of American financial institutions, ignore market demand in energy consumption, increase prices for consumers and kill American jobs.” The letter says, … [Read more...] about GOP House Members Accuse John Kerry of ‘Abuse of Power’ for Pressing Banks to Deny Funding for Fossil Fuel Entities
MSNBC’s Wallace: Trying to Appeal to Trump’s Base Will Be the ‘Demise’ of GOP
MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace said Wednesday on her show “Deadline” that if Republican lawmakers only appeal to former President Donald Trump’s base, it will be the “demise” of the party. Wallace said, “New polling this week by former Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton shows exactly what he set out to prove that enthusiasm is waning for the former guy. People are not that into him anymore. Fear of him among the GOP is totally unfounded. From that poll, independents repelled by one thing, Donald Trump’s personality. 37% hold a positive view of Trump and 55% negative view of him. While President Biden with a net positive approval of 48% among those same independent voters, and 46% have an unfavorable account. That means Trump upside down 20 points. A twenty-point difference between the two men among independents.” She continued, “I think that the number among independents with a shrinking party registration among Republicans is perilous in national elections. I don’t think … [Read more...] about MSNBC’s Wallace: Trying to Appeal to Trump’s Base Will Be the ‘Demise’ of GOP
Maxine Waters: GOP Love to Target Me as an Uppity Black Woman — ‘They’re Not Going to Get Me Out of Office’
Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” that Republicans target her as an “uppity” black woman to fundraise. Waters said, “We’ve got to stay active, get more active, more confrontational, make sure that they know we mean business.” Reacting to Derek Chauvin’s conviction for the murder of George Floyd, Waters said, “I have fought this for many, many years. I have been engaged for many years, and you mentioned Rodney King. Yes, that was another special time when we saw him beaten, I mean, literally beaten, and then we were told we could not believe our own eyes, and we did not get justice. So today is very special. Something very special has happened.” She continued, “I’m criticized all the time, and of course, the Republicans make a target of me. As you know, I am passionate on these issues, having lived with them so long, having seen so much injustice. So I’m delighted that we have the verdict that we got today. I could not believe it, but it … [Read more...] about Maxine Waters: GOP Love to Target Me as an Uppity Black Woman — ‘They’re Not Going to Get Me Out of Office’
