Mike Pence: Rush Limbaugh ‘Made Conservatism Fun’
Former Vice President Mike Pence celebrated the life of Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday, reacting to the news of the legendary broadcaster’s death. “Rush Limbaugh, he made conservatism fun. There’s an old saying that winners have fun, and Rush Limbaugh’s voice made conservatives proud,” Pence said in a phone call on Fox News. Limbaugh’s death from lung cancer was announced on his show by his wife Kathryn on Wednesday. He was 70 years old. The former vice president said he was among the tens of millions of Limbaugh “ditto-head” fans mourning the death of a conservative champion in America. “Rush Limbaugh will never be forgotten,” Pence said, noting a “deep sense of personal loss” in his household. “There will never be another Rush Limbaugh.” “He was a good man. People heard his heart every day, but no one in my lifetime has ever more consistently given voice to the timeless ideals of this country than Rush Limbaugh, and he will be dearly missed,” Pence continued. Rush Limbaugh, “voice of American conservatism,” has died
PALM BEACH, Fla. — Rush Limbaugh, the talk radio host who ripped into liberals, foretold the rise of Donald Trump and laid waste to political correctness with a merry brand of malice that made him one of the most powerful voices on the American right, died Wednesday. He was 70. Limbaugh, an outspoken lover of cigars, had been diagnosed with lung cancer. His death was announced on his website. Trump, during a State of the Union speech, awarded Limbaugh the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Unflinchingly conservative, wildly partisan, bombastically self-promoting and larger than life, Limbaugh galvanized listeners for more than 30 years with his talent for vituperation and sarcasm. He called himself an entertainer, but his rants during his three-hour weekday radio show broadcast on nearly 600 U.S. stations shaped the national political conversation, swaying ordinary Republicans and the direction of their party. Blessed with a … [Read more...] about Rush Limbaugh, “voice of American conservatism,” has died
Rush Limbaugh (1951-2021): A Giant of Talk Radio and American Conservatism
Rush Limbaugh, the legendary broadcaster who pioneered talk radio as a political medium, and inspired millions of American conservatives, passed away Wednesday at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer that lasted over a year. Limbaugh’s death was announced during the opening of his radio program by his wife, Kathryn. He had been absent for several days, the longest such absence during months of medical treatment; his last live broadcast was on February 2. The Rush Limbaugh Show Born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Limbaugh was largely self-taught, leaving college to pursue his radio ambitions. He cycled through several radio jobs in the 1970s, and was dismissed over and over again before finding a job with the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball. He soon left that job and returned to radio, finding success at KFBK in Sacramento, California, where he began to develop a devoted audience as one of the first conservative commentators. In 1987, the Federal … [Read more...] about Rush Limbaugh (1951-2021): A Giant of Talk Radio and American Conservatism
Trump’s Reconquest of the GOP May Have an Upside for Democracy
The conservative movement is keeping its mask off. Photo: Tom Brenner/REUTERS Less than two months after inciting an insurrection against the U.S. Congress, Donald Trump will reportedly declare himself the Republican Party’s “ presumptive 2024 nominee ” at this weekend’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). And he won’t be wrong. Losing an election is typically enough to sour a party’s voters on its defeated standard-bearer. Fumbling a half-assed coup attempt is, in most countries, enough to get an ex-president imprisoned or even killed. But red America’s consummate “winner” has emerged from electoral and insurrectionary defeat with his grip on the GOP faithful intact. Last week, a Politico-Morning Consult poll found that 59 percent of Republican voters would like Trump to “play a major role” in their party going forward — up 18 points since January 7, the day after the Capitol Hill riot. The survey also found that a large plurality of GOP voters … [Read more...] about Trump’s Reconquest of the GOP May Have an Upside for Democracy
