Poorly written, hard to follow, odd style. I’d recommend Biden’s autobiography, "Promises to Keep", instead. I couldn’t finish this one.
Being a fairly right winged conservative hearing the name, Joe Biden, used to put a bad taste in my mouth. Before reading his book, Joe Biden a Life of Trial and Redemption, by Jules Witcover, Joe Biden frankly seemed like a crazy liberal who did not do a whole lot of thinking before he spoke. He seemed all \\”politician\\” with no heart, but after reading this book I have a new found respect for Mr. Biden as a person. The book showed a more human side to Mr. Biden which I really liked, because of its authenticity, play by play accounts of his life, and how it simple told his story with seemingly no bias.
The first part of the book talks about Mr. Biden’s childhood and upbringing which brings out the authenticity very well of this book. Joe was you average American boy back in the 50’s. He got B’s in school and played football with avid fascination. The book presents Mr. Biden as an easy going boy who had high aspirations for his future. It brings out his human side. We are all human and prone to make mistakes and reading this book I got more of a sense that Mr. Biden is human just like you and me.
I enjoyed reading about Mr. Biden’s life in a play by play format. Much of the book has commentary by his close friends, family and associates. It shed light upon how much Mr. Biden was a family man. Above all else he put his family first. Mr. Biden’s daughter in the book talks about how her father was always there, if not in person than on the phone. Despite his responsibilities to the federal government he managed to balance his life at home very well. He commuted from his home in Delaware to the capitol of the United States over 7000 times throughout his career on a train. Mr. Biden is described by friends as friendly and down to earth.
Lastly I appreciated how the book seemed to steer clear of bias influence. It was not written by Biden so it could not be a skewed by what he wanted to put into his own book but it presents the facts of what he went through in his life. It builds off what his family and friends say about him who are a reliable source. His family and friends are around the man more than anyone else and they are the ones that comment the most in this book.
The book was a good read and was very interesting. After reading this book I have learned to respect Mr. Biden more than I ever thought I would. I may not respect his policies that he has supported or condoned but I do respect how highly he values his family. I would recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to get a new and fresh look at current Vice President Joe Biden.what he went through in his life. It builds off what his family and friends say about him who are a reliable source. His family and friends are around the man more than anyone else and they are the ones that comment the most in this book.
