I knew Connie Smith and the rest of the family, I went to school with them, my friends and I were out camping all night in Idaho ct. facing the play ground behind the court were the killings happened. We spent many days in the woods with Butch and the gang and he was a little weird , he did things to make you worry about being alone with Butch. I remember after the killings Butch had no emotions about what happened.
Having lived through this I was disappointed there was never any closure. Someone got away with a triple murder and is still out there. The research was very well done. To bad the author didn’t contact me or my family for more background or backlash from this life changing event.
Such a sad story and to make it worst the MPs did a terrible job of investigating. I was living in another area of base housing when this took place. I did not know how the MPs handled what little info they had because they allowed the crime scene to be contaminated.
WHAT STARTED AS A CURIOUS GOOGLE LEAD ME TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK AND ANSWER SOME OF MY QUESTIONS… I WAS AN 8 YEAR OLD BOY FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THIS HAPPENED….I HAVE NEVER FORGOT THAT AUGUST SUMMER DAY AND WHAT HAPPENED. I WAS TOLD AND ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT BUTCH SMITH WAS THE KILLER…. AFTER READING THIS I NOW BELEIVE IT WAS ANOTHER PERSON….. THIS BOOK WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD …GOOD AND BAD….
Ms. Simpson, the author, accurately records most of what transpired during the intitial investigation and the judicial proceedings. I was one of the chief investigators from the Naval Investigative Service that looked into the Smith-Sager Homicides back in 1981. It was an investigation gone astray almost from the beginning. Investigators made some serious mistakes and overlooked key evidence. I can take credit for the title of the book as it was I who noted that the NIS displayed \\”Tunnel Vision\\” from the very begining of the investigation. The killer, who of course was never identified in the book, is a free man today because of this fact. The book discribes those things that can go wrong in a major investigation when criminal investigators jump to conclusions and fail to follow logical leads.
