Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, whose job-interview schedule has been jam-packed, appears destined to leave the 49ers to become a head coach. And the list of logical outside candidates to replace him keeps dwindling. The potential result: DeMeco Ryans, the 49ers’ inside linebackers coach for the past three seasons, will become their next defensive coordinator. That wouldn’t be a huge surprise. Last week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Ryans would be a candidate, assuming Saleh leaves, by offering a strong endorsement of his coaching acumen. “It’s only a matter of time before DeMeco is a coordinator in this league,” Shanahan said. “It’s a matter of time before DeMeco will be a head coach.” Since then, the odds have increased that Ryans will earn an in-house promotion. This week, two high-profile coordinator candidates who were logical targets of the 49ers, former Atlanta head coach Dan Quinn and ex-Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, came off the market. Quinn became the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator and Bradley took the same role with the Raiders. Both run Saleh’s 4-3 defense, a system Shanahan prefers, and have ties to the 49ers.
