Less than a week ago, the Stanford women were unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the country. After Friday night’s 70-66 loss to No. 6 UCLA in Santa Cruz, Stanford not only has a losing streak, it’s no longer in first place in the Pac-12. The fifth-ranked Cardinal (11-2, 8-2) fell a half-game behind Arizona in the conference. Stanford’s first loss came in a 77-72 overtime decision at Colorado on Sunday. At the outset of her postgame Zoom news conference Friday, Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer gave the Bruins (9-2, 7-2) their due. “I have to credit UCLA. They were extremely aggressive,” VanDerveer said. “They were extremely physical, and they came to play.” Stanford had trailed by as many as 11 late in the third quarter and still was down by seven with less than five minutes remaining before it scored seven straight points to tie the game. It was 66-66 with 1:23 left when Haley Jones fouled Charisma Osborne on a 3-point try. Osborne hit two of the three foul shots to make it 68-66, Bruins, and they were ahead to stay.
