An 85-year-old man died over the weekend, four days after he was hit by a car while walking in the Mission District, San Francisco police said on Wednesday. The crash happened Jan. 19 on San Jose Avenue and 24th Street just after 8:30 p.m., authorities said. Officers arrived to find the man, who police have not identified, lying in the roadway. He was later taken to a hospital, where he died on Saturday. The driver of the Toyota Corolla that hit the man remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. Impairment did not appear to be a factor. Police were still investigating the crash. More than 200 people have been killed and another 20,000 seriously injured in traffic incidents in San Francisco since 2014, when the city began its Vision Zero campaign to eliminate traffic deaths by 2024. The highest proportion of deaths has been in the Tenderloin District, according to data compiled by the non-profit pedestrian advocacy group Walk San Francisco. District 9, which includes the Mission District, has seen more than 20 deaths and nearly 2,000 injuries, according to a Walk San Francisco report.
