Rent grant creates warmer holidays

It was either pay the rent or replace the furnace. Danniel Kientz knew he couldn’t afford to do both. When you’re living on a Social Security check, there’s not a lot left over at the end of the month for things like new furnaces. Usually there’s not a lot left over at the beginning of the month, either. The furnace stopped working early this year, just as winter was settling in at the Calistoga mobile home park where the 78-year-old retired hypnotist and RV salesman has lived for 20 years with two loud-mouthed parrots, Shasta and Cricket, who don’t much like being cold, either. There was nothing for Kientz to do but put on a jacket. Then a sweater. Then a jacket on top of the sweater. Then he turned on the kitchen stove and put thick blankets over the bird cages. Running the stove is a notoriously inefficient way to heat a home but Kientz was getting desperate. “I was still cold,” he said. “The birds were cold.
